I hope this is posted in the correct place. First off I have a 2004 5. 9 Ho 3. 73 gears. I am getting about 17-19 mpg. This guy who owns the local hardware by me has 1999 cummins. He claims he is getting 30-34 mpg,s. I get talking to him,he claims he ordered the truck new with 3. 15 allison gears. Is this BS ?? Just courios. The truck has 100,000 miles on it. He claims dodge called him up a year later to see if he liked the gear ratio, first one they ever sold. Sounds kind of fishey to me. coobie:D

That kind of person tells lies to cover lies, and can't remember all the lies he has told.

I drove a school bus in college, and I was talking with the guy putting diesel in them one day and he told me that the gassers got about 5-6 MPG (probably close) and the diesels got 25-30MPG  - he probably just did not know-your hardware store friend is a liar on the gears, and probably does not really know how to consistently/correctly check MPG.

My 2 cents...

He might be telling the truth. The other day I got fuel and reset my computer. I drove home (2 miles) and I was getting 34 MPG... ... its a 12% grade down hill.

He is full-o-it.

Watch where you step when you are near this guy... and don't touch him... **it all over the place!:D

The only gears ever available in the 2 gen Cummins powered trucks were 3. 54, 3. 55, and 4. 10. I think in the first gen 1/2 ton trucks, you could get a 3. 07 with the auto transmission.

I know I must have met that guy's kinfolk last summer at the local convenience store. He had a new 03 4x4 Q-cab with a 25 ft goose neck trailer. He did'nt notice me pulling up on the other side of building in my CTD. I ask him how he was liking his new Dodge Cummins an he replied very well I'm getting 25 mpg pulling that 25 ft goose neck with 3000 miles on it. It still had the paper dealer tags on it. Sorta hard for me to believe and keep a straight face. :D

Thanks for the responses. I thought he was full of BS. I never heard of 315 allison gears in a dodge cummins. The one that made me laugh was 34 mpgs,:D :D coobie

Gearing doesn't make a big difference in the unladen fuel mileage of the CTD's. When I converted my '99 from 3. 55's to 4. 10's I lost about 1 MPG in freeway economy.

Thirty MPG? If you believe that I've got some beach front property in Arizona.
