Thought this was wonderful. . wanted to share: Filled up yesterday... 405 miles, 16. 26gal (I fill up into the neck and check level visually)= 24. 90mpg!!! This was 1/2 city, 1/2 highway driving, mostly with the a/c on!! The only things I do "unusual" are: gently squeeze on the throttle, and when I see a changing light waaaay ahead, I will pop into neutral and coast the last 1/4 to 1/2 mile... wierd, but it apparently works!

Didn't figure it out from my fuel receipts until yesterday. Made a 700 mile round trip on Sat. with my 2500, fueled up at the turn around and home, the entire day had 30-45 mph winds. When the wind was at my tail I got 27. 4 mpg, coming back against the wind dropped to 20. 6, same road, same speed. Climate plays a big factor, I normally get 22-24 mpg unloaded. 12 valves rule!!! #ad

Ya know,, I'm starting to think of buying a used 12 valve rather than ordering one of the new 2002 or even waiting for the 2003 model. My main concern is fuel economy. Ever since I joined the TDR, I've read over and over how the 12 valve engines always seem to get the superior mileage. I might just start checking the classifieds for a real nice 97 model.

My father's 97 consistently gets 3 to 4 more mpg than my 2001, and the 97 is auto too! 'Course he won't go over 1800 rpm either! I told him he's got a buyer for his truck when/if he wants to sell it in the future. Enjoy your 12 valves fellows!

We just got back from a 4800 mile trip pulling our 25' 5er. The average for the trip was a little over 15 mpg, and that was running 65-70. The highway that we used was I40 from Barstow Ca. to Hot Springs Ark.
Running empty back and forth to work I get 21-23!

I've been getting 19. 8mpg commuting to the office. 50/50 city/hwy

Have no 100% hwy figures yet,
but have experimented w/ throttle application & maintaining certain rpm range in town to get the 19. 8. 94's volumetric efficiency #'s (per TDR article) place it @ 1600rpm. The closer I keep it to 1600 the better. I don't worry about what any vibrations might due to transmission (don't really notice any anyway) at that rpm per TDR report.

Practically, I just try to keep it between 1500-1800. EASY throttle application go hand & hand w/ that also. W/O the GV OD, I'd be toast on the hwy & over revving w/ that 4. 10. My next step is to check valve timing to see if I can do even better. My Only problem is that I can no longer find the value or the purpose of my Toy p/u which is way slower & gets horrible mpg.

I get 17. 8 average driving 80/20 (city/highway) with about 1600 lbs of tools and gear in the back. Always makes me smile. Got only 11 with my 1500 V8 Ram a few years back..... Ohe the days of low mileage #ad

Mike sounds a lot like my Toy, '82 w/ 280k, yellow faded to white. Old single wall bed construction, dented to he!! from things hitting from the inside. Blue book is $1k, I wouldn't sell it for $5k,paid $5600 new. In fact I would jump in today and drive 2000 miles without checking the oil, it's that reliable. They have their place, but I don't feel the new Toys are as good.

I just filled up (21 gal/500mi) and got 23. 8 mpg. For the last 6 months, I have consistantly gotton 22-25 mpg driving half city and half freeway. My truck is empty.

I noticed that while driving on the freeway at 65mph, I was using 4 lbs of boost. So, I started just holding 4 lbs of boost while on the freeway (slowed on up hills and speeds up on down hills), and only use 3 lbs of boost when accelerating. This results in 23-24 mpg consistantly. I drove a couple of tank fulls never going over 3 lbs of boost and got around 25 mpg, but was too slow for me.

I also tried reducing the boost to 3 lbs while cruising and then reducing while accelerating, but it did not make as much difference as it does when accelerating.

I now drive the boost gauge and hate driving my wifes that doesn't have any gauges.

Later,
Tim Rodney

I must be the low mpg king. Average 11 mpg. Usually always running around 11-16K GCVW, with a 5 ft. high headboard acting like a drag parachute. Don't think I can do much to improve the mileage. I was thinking of an air foil on the roof of the cab to divert wind over the headboard. Anybody try that? If so, what were the results?

I was totaly happy when I got 17. 83 mpg. This was comepletly highway with cruise set on about 65 mph. Strong headwinds though. I have only broke into the 18's once in 70,000 miles. OH WELL!

Just filled up and calculated my mileage yesterday. 537. 3 miles and it took 11. 21 gallons to fill to the very top of the neck. WOW, 47. 93 MPG, thats some serious mileage for around town. I get over 55mpg on the hiway. #ad
If you add in the difference in cost of red fuel it gets even better. All this from an 8 valve with Bosch VE pump. Who needs a hybrid??

I have a bumper sticker that reads "55MPG and I know I stink, but have you checked your mileage lately? Chances are it stinks too. "

OH. . ah. . did I mention that this was in my VW Rabbit diesel pickup?

NO? oh... sorry

I noticed Koa Man had limited slip diff. So do I , do you think that would lower fuel mileage. I get consistently about 18. 5 on highway driving 65 to 75.

I use my Toyota PU for the dirty work(when I'm dirty) and short drives around the farm, take out on the highway about twice a year, hasn't been insured for five. Always good to have an extra rig around in case something breaks.

ya mean some people would insure a Toy?

As Wilbur said to Orville, your "right"... It IS nice not to have to do a rush job on any CTD mod you got planned...

This w/e I got the appropriate job scheduled for the Toy. Manure p/u! We got plenty & We'll fill that bed up a few times & not have to worry about spillage or scratching the paint! Actually, the red paint has faded to a pathetic pink & needs to be scratched up real good #ad

My mileage drops to below 10mpg because I switch to the the work truck for this task, But, My yearly combined average still remains over 50mpg. I can haul 95% of what I need in my Rabbit. Of course the problem with running 48hp is, you must have your ego in check because there's nothing macho about a Rabbit. #ad

Hammer,
Thanks for the info. I was looking at one in the Camping World catalog and debating wether or not I should order it. I guess I will. A hill that I could previously climb at 75 mph before I converted to a flatbed can only be done at 60 now before EGT problems set in. Car & Driver did a test on police cars, removing the light bar on the top of the roof increased top speed by 12 mph. So improved aerodynamics will be a big help for me.

I get 13 around town in my dualie-15 on highway. 11 pulling 12,000 lbs of camper, etc. I have roof mounted spoiler KOA MAN. My mileage did not change but it handles better with a strong sidewind. The mileage around town isn't the greatest but I have a problem,I like to see clouds of black smoke covering those little itty bitty cars. #ad

I camped at Salida this weekend and did a bobtail trip to the Black Canyon. 200 miles towing and 300 on one tank and got 20. 24 that tank. Coming back today in strong headwind part of the way and passing everything I could on the passes got 16. 33. Shook the truck and filled to the cap every tank! I'm not touching a thing on the engine anymore! Craig
