I'm first time diesel owner with a 4th gen cummins ram 3500 getting mid 14's mpg with 16,500mi dealer said it will improve with more miles but, I want to know if this is BS or what you guys are doing to improve your mpgs thanks!

I have a 2010 Dually, you milage is on par with what I get, actually a little better. Where I live and work, 13 mpg is good for me.

Running around town I'm seeing in the 13's and I've seen (hand caluculated) as high as 17 on the freeway with the cruise set at 60 to 65.

That is about what I am getting empty too. Maybe 15 mpg, but not much more. I was getting around 18-20 with my 5. 9, but doubt I will ever see that again. I lost about 2-2. 5 mpg when towing with the new truck and am coming to realize that probably won't change much either. It is a joy to drive and tow with, but it comes at a price!

I dont have any experience with the new trucks. But I have an idea it shares this fact with the 2nd gens. It is a big sail. I never drive any faster than 60 or up to 65 on the highway. It seems to make quite a difference in mileage.

What they all said. 14,500 on the odometer and barely getting 13mpg. Wish I had my 5. 9 back. Sorry I traded for this 2010.

As I just replied in the regen thread, we see about 13mpg average. Mostly city driving. After a long highway trip (>50 miles) I'll see 18 for a couple days, then back to the low teens.

10-11 towing 14000 pound 5th wheel, 15-17 highway empty, city empty I don't know, it is almost always used for hauling, this is a 2WD Dually

I've been on a few long trips without towing if I watch my speed I can get right around the 17mpg mark with 46K on the odometer (all stock). I've never checked it with all local driving... . I'm too afraid to check it with the price of diesel these days.

What about you guys that deleted? Doesnt that improve the mileage somewhat? Its insane to see the new trucks putting those kind of numbers out compared to the early 1st gens. Why are we going backwards so much? Is it truly worthwhile to tune these engines so that theyre putting out less NOX but at a price of burning nearly one and a half times the fuel? How is this any "greener"? I just cant understand the concept.

]Amen diesel4life guess you got to be an electric car driver or be huffin from the exhaust pipe for it to make sense!!

thanks for all your post wanted to see if it was my driving style or what. I don't want to have to delete but I AINT putin up with 14. 6 mpgs for much longer!! CUMMINS needs to fix this if they want to stay competitive!!

Are you really going backward when your '98 came with 180 hp and 420 ft/lbs of torque and this new truck puts out 350hp and 750 ft/lbs??

Not to be picky but 800 torque is corect.

Just checked mileage on the Limo, hand calc 13. 8 mpg 2/3 freeway at 60 to 70 mph with 1/3 country road 35mph and city. The lie O meter said 13. 9.

I did a run from San Diego to Palm springs re set lie O meter on the fly non stop trip 17. 2.

Truck weighs almost 9,000# solo.

I have a 2010 Mega-cab w/3. 73s and the 68RFE. From new to about 70k miles i averaged between 14. 5-15mpg with stock tires and driving mostly 80mph on the interstates around here in GA. I put the KORE suspension on it and put the 285/75/17 Nitto Dura Grapplers on it. This is a true 34" tire. With the larger tire size my mileage dropped to less than 12mpg. I did correct the miles traveled vs. what the odometer showed too. I was sick at these numbers so I decided to do the deletes and put a Smarty on it. I am now seeing an overall average of 15. 5 mpg. I can get 17-19 on the interstate. Do the deletes, it is worth it.

Yes we are going backwards. With some engine mods You can easily get the 1st and 2nd gens up into the 350 hp range and not sacrifice a whole lot of mpgs if you drive with your head and not your foot. I can think of 3 friends right off the top of my head as proof. Theyre all daily drivers, reliable, and 2 of them have been on a dyno to prove the numbers. Yet they all get better numbers mpg wise than what everybodys posting here. Im not starting a war here, Ive been in a few 6. 7s and I think hands down they are twice the truck that Ive got, I wont argue that for a minute. But look at the gas engines of today compared to 98. If they can make better power AND mileage, why cant we? Yeah I know, somebodys gonna say Im comparing apples to oranges... but am I really?

and this my friends is why the 5. 9 liter engines are holding their values so much. it turns my stomach to see the disgusting economy of these new "greener diesels". glad i have a 5. 9 liter and am going to hold on to it as long as possible. . all the manufacturers are trying to 1 up each other as to who has the most power, ect. at $4. 29 a gallon and rising, id much rather have 180 horses and 19 mpg that a muscular 350+ and be filling every 300 miles. . my early '04 just ran a 320 mile round trip last week and got 20. 24 mpg, hand calculated, the lie-o-meter said 21. 4. tank was still well above 1/2 mark. .

Harvey I agree with you there as I mentioned above Im not looking to start any wars here nor am I comparing a 1st or 2nd gen to the new 6. 7 because when it comes to driveability and power there is no comparison the newer 6. 7 is in a whole different realm the only point I was trying to make is we can send man to the moon with a 4x4 and run around why cant we / shouldnt we expect an engine thats capable of better power with at least the same mpgs as a 20 year old truck??? When your sacrificing gallons of fuel to make less emissions is that really bieng "greener"? The only thing thats greener is Jedd Clampets a. k. a. the oil gods pockets if you ask me its nothing but a money game send the technology the wrong way to make the working people cough up our hard earned money so the billionaires can continue their lush lifestyles. Ok Im done now sorry for turnin your thread the wrong direction CKaza
