Just got back from a 400 mile trip pulling my fifth wheel. Iam am a little disappointed with my mileage and speed up the hills.

I have an edge EZ, with a 4" straight through exhaust. 3. 54 auto trans in my 99 4X4 Q. C.

Averaged 10. 2 MPG all highway. About 1/2 of the trip was up and down small hills and about 5% was several fairly steep grades.

Couldn't pull the steep grades in fourth, had to wind up in third and still was only doing 35-40 MPH up the hills. 30 PSI of boost, and EGT was 1100 degrees F.

My Gross weight of trailer and truck was 19,900 lbs.

Does this sound about right?

I should mention that my figures are at running 68-70 MPH. I know if I drive slower I would get better, oh well can not have everything. I also have a high profile 5th wheel which cuts fuel mileage. All other variables are close to yours includeing going up and down hills.

You are in the all park

Given what you're pulling and the grades you mention, sounds like you're where you should be.

I pull a 4k 22' trailer... ... same truck as you, I have 4:10s with a VA box. I can (but not always, and don't know why) get 12-13 mpg at 60 mph, and can pull the worst grades my State has at anywhere from 55-60 mph WOT. Worst I get pulling flat n level with the trailer is 11. 5 @ 60, but usually get better.

Unloaded I'm at 18-19 combined, 22 and on rare occasions, 23+ mpg @ 60 mph.

IMHO, the gear spacing on the 5 speed is too wide for towing in the mountains. I had an 01 with 5 speed 3. 54 and had to use 3rd gear also. The 6 speed has closer gears and fills the gap between the 5 speed's 3-4 range and works much better. I traded for another 01 with 6 speed 4. 10's and tows great. As for MPH, speed makes a big difference.

On long trips going 75 I get about 19. That was a typical number when I went from Salt Lake City to Abbotsford. Going 60- 65 I have gotten 24mpg, only once though, going from SLC to Heber and back. Driving to work and back, which is about 15 miles, I get 15-16. All that cold engine time cuts back on the mileage.
