What Class Hitch do I Have?

i admit that i pulled a 19 hour drive from Wheatland, WY to just south of Sacramento, CA in my 4x4. That sucked so bad. I should have stopped but I got lucky that I didn't crash. Never do that again.

I can drive the wife and I up to 500 miles comfortably per day. With the two kids, its hard to get more than 350 in a day and that is in a comfortable mini-van with loads of power and amenities.

Now, I need to make a trip to Moab in Sept with a 25' gooseneck hauling my fullsize trail rig. Its 950 miles each way, so I am going to do the 490 to Vegas the first day and the other 460 to Moab the next. That will be pushing it, but I am expecting to have a co-pilot to let me sleep for a few miles if need be.

Did 4200 miles in 4 days back in '61. I-40 was still Rt 66, but not nearly as many cars and trucks back then. Dumb? Yup, would I do it again? Nope. When you are young you can do anything, RIGHT!

Now - at this age - I try for 500-600 miles a day.

1979 - 1,110 miles - 22 hours

4 weeks ago - 890 miles pulling 5th wheel - 16 hours - Bristol, TN to Hernando, MS, to Fayetteville, AR. 4AM EDT to 7PM CDT. Not bad for an old man.

We pulled a 25' travel trailer from south of Houston, Tx through the Dakotas, over to northern Minnesota and back on a more easterly route. 5500 mi. in 27 days. We planned on 300 miles per day for 20 of the days. It worked out very well with several more stopovers than planned and still had a very leisurely last 3 days. Some days were 400-450 milers and one was 54 miles. We stopped overnite at several Walmarts and every 2-3 days at an R/V park to take on water, wash clothes, and clean out the holding tanks. St Louis was the worst city to drive through, with Oklahoma City a distant 2nd. Peak traffic, secondary roads, road construction, etc, will probably hold you to 50-55 miles covered per hour. I plan on 50 mph average progress.

You can make the schedule you've laid out, but it will be tough to enjoy it.

Good luck, Tom

I once did 6,060 miles in 6 days ... ... ... but, I don't recommend anybody try that though.

If your on the road for business, 700-800 miles a day is very doable. For me, that means stops to break the horses, stops to drop off/pick up horses, eat, sleep etc.

Ha ha oh the long drives. Take your time. Stop before you are tired.

I have done some real dumb drives. Can't even remember. My friend and I drove for Phoenix from Toronto without stopping. When I was driving by myself I figure I drove about 12 hours a day. Slept for 8. 4 hours to fuel, inspect vehicle, shower, go on internet, eat.

If you drive 400 miles in one day you won't wear yourself out. I can do one day shots at 7-800 miles but day 2 I am dying after 400 miles. Good Luck

I did 5,770 miles in 6 days a couple of years ago. Reno to Maryland to Reno. Would have been quicker, but I broke down in the parking lot at the Cabelas in Sydney NE. Worst place in the world for my wallet.

Hey Jason. Good to see you here. I'm still up in the air on that trip. i will be playing that by ear when the time comes. But to try and stay on topic a little. Last summer I drove from Moab to Modesto in one day. I was pulling my tandem enclosed trailer with a 10" slide in camper on back of the truck and 5 people. (no help driving) We left @7 am and got home @9 pm. It got a little busy getting through the 70/191/15/50 mess but once on 50 it was clear sailing. 872 miles total. Stopped only for fuel and in Carson to eat. I was tired though.

How about leaving New Braunfels, Texas at 10am on Sat. morning driving to Talladega, Alabama in 14 hours, sleep in the car for about 3 hours, watch the Nascar Race, leave the race and drive to Meridian, Ms. sleep for 5 hours and arrive back home at 4pm on Monday??? Will not do that again!!! But it was awesome to see them drive 3 and 4 wide most of the race at 190+ mph. Oo.

Not towing anything?? Heck, rookie run !!!! :-laf :p

College (1983 or 84)-- Reno to NE PA in two and half days. More like "daze"! Had to make my best friend's bday. Slept when I could for little bits at rest stops.

After marriage (1992)-- Reno to Lummi Island, WA and back in 3 days. We just got a Goldwing and I went for a ride!

Would I do it again? HECK NO! Older and wiser now. Way too dangerous. Depending on how I feel, I go 6-10 hours. It's amazing the difference in competant drive time day to day. Sometimes I could keep going for hours, others I'm ready to take a nap an hour into the drive.

Go as far as you feel comfortable. You can make miles up on another day if you have to.

empty and alone I do 1200 - 1400 mi, towing trailer alone 1000 mi, with family and trailer 700 - 800 mi

Hehe! I always say by myself I eat breakfast w/coffee in West Virginia and pee when I hit the Georgia Line! With the wife or anyone else, forget it! :-laf
