I used to get really good fuel mileage. Around 18mpg with mostly city driving and 20+ on the highway. I just filled up and checked the mileage and it was 12mpg with all stop and go driving. (Northern Suburbs of Pittsburgh Pa). Any suggestions as to what happened. I know that winter fuel and ULSD takes some of the mileage away but I didn't think that much. I thought I might get better mileage with the #10 plate. I try to stay out of the pedal too. Any Suggestions? Thanks Pete

I don't have any other signs that the timing slipped, unless I'm missing them. What are the signs? What kind of mpg do you get in the city. Pete

Thats about what I've been getting this winter during stop and go driving. Last fall I was getting 16-17 in town and 19+ on highway. If you find a cause let me know, I'd like to do better also.

Pete I have averaged 15-16 mpg travelling at average speeds of 70-75 mph. This is start and stop and hwy. I also have a 4:10 ratio and one would think my mileage should be worse. Normally you would experience a slight power loss, (sluggish), and worse mileage with slipped timing. Other things to look for would be the fuel lines where they connect to the tank and also under the intake manifold, there is a rubber hose that tends to become brittle and although you can't really see a crack or hole, under a bit of pressure you will see several leaks along the seam.

Let us know . cheers Derek

I'm pretty sure I lost the MPG when I installed the #10 plate which was also around the time of the ULSD. I think those 2 are the culprits. Pete

It could be a number of reasons, such as the ULSD as you mentioned, look for low air tire pressure or wore out tires. Have your driving habits changed, are you taking other routes. I always get my best mileage with Chevron diesel, although I'll told that all diesel is the same.

My winter mileage sucks. I`m sure the ULSD doesnt help any, but who knows. . the #10 plate will kill your stop-go mileage, highway mileage with constant rpm's are the only thing that wont change. .

Winter Fuel

Has anyone else heard that, especially in the more northern states, that suppliers will change the blend of diesel fuel to make it more resistant to gel? I have been told by several people that winter blends get much worse mileage than summer blends.

Just a thought.

Tp0d, is there a plate that is better for stop and go mileage and for towing lite loads like firewood and snowmobile trailer? Thanks Pete

A buddy of mine has a 2006 ctd ran a few tanks of regular diesel through it then was forced to put the new crap in and lost 5. 5 mpg right off the bat :-(

and yes we northerners do loose fuel mpg in the winter, but also figure in that my truck spends more time idling too

You can have power or economy, cant really have both. I guess if you're really trying to cut back and you dont need to move too fast, you could install a valet switch and just cut the boost to the afc. . either that, or you could try turning down your star wheel a bunch, that will stop low end smoke and waste of fuel... .

i just fill it up and drive it like i stole it. . lol. i think though, its time to hassle my transmission rebuilder about a tighter TC

My fuel economy has gone up with my mods with average driving. If I keep my foot in it or tow it's a little lower than it was "in the beginning". I have seen a drop with winter fuel, ULSD, and the cold temps.

My fuel economy hasnt dropped with ULSD. might have even went up a fuzz. The cold has been the biggest enemy of my fuel economy. The colder it gets the more it drops.

Ya, it was really cold around here the last couple weeks. I'll wait and see what the warmer weather does for the mileage.
