A friend and his family are visiting us, they were taking the wife's house tour and his wife wanted to make a display like my wife did of the ribbons and other Military metal junk, that with them along with $3. 00 will get you a cup of coffee at starbucks these days. Im not sure but don't your DD 214 have your entitlements for citations on it. I would look on mine but it in a safe deposit box at the bank.

Thanks

The green folder was what the administrator clerks wrote notes in and filed your paperwork in. It was the "tickler" to remind them to submit your awards and such (letters of commendation, etc ) before computers took over. Some clerks gave them to you when you transferred to another unit so your paperwork would have continuity. Depends on how long you were in... ... . I'll check my own files and see.

I do remember getting a file that had that kind of info in it, but at the time I wasn't really interested in that kind of thing I was trying to get along with a half a leg missing and a VERY LARGE CHIP ON MY SHOULDER. MY Mother was that one that gave me the info when my wife and I got married, I still tossed it in the round file. The wife was the one that thought more of my Military Career at that time than I did and pulled the file from the round file bucket. We never had a Den to hang the stuff she was proud of because we always had nieces and nephews living with us so I never had a Den until we moved to MT. She built this display case with things in it and put it up with wall anchors that would leave a large hole (that I would have to repair) if taken down. That along with some letters from States that over the years I went to help in time of disasters and driving awards. We call this my Brag Room (aka Den)

I would still like to be able to take them down and get that FREE cup of coffee that the Air Force Chaplain said I could, no free rides any more I guess. ;)

My list was on the short side also, however, my father-in-law's list was extensive. Several years ago all the kids thought it would be real nice to put his stuff on display so I was designated to assemble the collectibles, etc. Unfortunately, time and dis-interest had done its' worst and much was missing. Long story short, I sent a copy of his DD-214 to a company in South Carolina (they advertise in the VFW magazine) and they replaced all of his missing medals and mounted them in an appropriate display case. It was an impressive gift that Christmas, and all of us enjoyed hearing tales of the 11th Airborne and his exploits in the Phillipines. He's still around and a tough old bird!

Now that I no longer have such a large CHIP on my shoulder its a nice addition to the den, but also brings with it the memories of why I have them to display in the first place. Thank You and Your Father-in-law for your service.

Keep patting yourself on the shoulder, Nasty. Your tour of duty is pathetic compared to the people I work with.

My hats off to them!!! tell us of your tour of duty Trud? the line at the college deferment office must have been horrific!!! "panty hose". riding up on your snatch and all must have been real bad. Look in the mirror that's pathetic

BIG, I certainly thank you and everyone else who has put their lives on the line to serve for our country!

Forget about the ones who can't appreciate that.

Big, and THANKS to you also. Time has proven to be the best healer, but you never really forget. I think we're just able to put it on the back shelf and it doesn't show as much. Sorry I missed you on the Gulf Coast after Katrina. Hah! maybe it will always show! Ed

That takes the prize as the dumbest post I've read on TDR this week.

I'll proudly pat BIG on the shoulder for his service, and render him a snappy salute, and any other veteran who served his or her country... especially one who lost body parts doing it!

What is your military background?

Big,

The DD-214 lists all of your medals, occupational specialties (i. e. MOS/AFSC/RATE), service characterization (i. e. HONORABLE, GENERAL, BCD, etc), years and dates of service, reentry code, military training, and home of record.

Mr Harris thanks for both the info I needed about the 214 was asked because the guy and his wife were getting ready to leave in the next day or so and I didn't have access to mine. Like one of the posts above it had been an eternity sense I had seen mine and even longer sense I had paid attention to what was on it.

I served two full hitches in the Air Force. I was never in a war zone and I was not decorated. I served 18 months in Okinawa and I came within a few days of being shipped to Viet Nam.

My oldest brother, who died one year ago last month, wasn't so lucky. He went to Viet Nam and came back without his right leg. He made the best of his life and did well with his prosthesis. He would get on his pitch roof to service his AC, he rode his bike, played volley ball. He could do just about anything. Yes he was decorated, but I have no idea what his medals were for, because he never displayed anything nor talked about his experiences.

By the way BIG, I keep my original DD214 in my safe at home, but I keep copies of it for many reasons. I keep a reduced copy in my wallet to use at Home Depot and Lowes for a 10% discount on big items.

I didn't know that I could get a discount from Lowes or Home depot until one time I was fishing around in my wallet for a card to pay for something and I pulled out my ID card and the gal gave me the discount, I asked her what's this a senior citizens discount? cause im not 65 she said I seen you ID card that is reason enough, HELL I don't care what the reason a discount is a discount.

I get a discount at the NAPA in town the guy is X Air Force. I new that I liked you for some other reason than just being Grizz, You were an Airdale what did you do Grizz?
