4-53 Detroit Diesel Performance

How about a $732 oil change?

Any of your diesel gurus or ex-military guys have experience with the late 60s early 70 multifuel engines? They sure sound strong when they go screaming by. I found a deuce and a half and am curious what I should expect in terms of durability and mileage. I know the mileage is going to be pretty low, the truck weighs over 11k. This particular one is a 1968 Cargo truck. The military is switching over from the multi fuel Continentals to a lower emission Mack design if I understand correctly. They also have a few Cummins, would love to have one of those! If you do not want to post a reply, just shoot me an e-mail at mailto:tyrfryr@cox.net Thanks! Glen

I drove several 2 1/2 and 5 ton trucks. The engines were low power units, slow to accelerate and not much down low. I am sure a few adjustment could be made to liven one up. They were low rpm also, I think manly to help with long life. The engines were the most reliable part of the truck, they suffered from suspension probalems. You have to remember we acually drove them in off road conditions. Alot of mudd, hills and usually always pulling something. I hope you got on with a pot winch, they were awesome, and needed. They use to have a hi-low gear box that it you were good, you could split gears with, just got to be fast.
