I had oil changed a little while ago and had front and rear diff's checked as well as trans and transfer case. All fluids were great except the front diff. Milky white fluid came out. I bought the truck with 59k miles on it and it has a little over 70k now. Took it to the dealer and had fluids changed and checked a week after I bought the truck (also had clutch changed because it went out). Soooo either the dealer never did anything with the front diff or it happened in between then and now. I have gone off roading quite a bit, but have never sat in any water. Why was the fluid milky (water and oil mix is my guess)??

P. S. I had them flush the fluid out until no more white stuff, is this good enough or should I take further actions?

Thanks for any input!

Johnny

You had water in it. It must be from offroading. You may want to move the vent line higher. Nothing you can do now but keep it clean.

Where is vent supposed to connect in at?

Going to pull diff plate off this weekend to replace gasket (it has a slight leak that could also cause this). Any reason to go to an aftermarket diff cover or should I just stick with stock?

Also checked other things under hood and this is what I found:

1. K&N was filthy (only about 15k miles on it so far)

2. Coolant is dark green (any recommendations for which brand to use, I heard I should use cummins brand coolant)

3. Brake fluid is dark

4. Oil filter is generic  (didn't change oil myself last time, that'll never happen again)

5. PS fluid is low(leaking around cap)

6. Engine compartment is full of mud, it doesn't hurt to power wash does it?

7. Think I'll replace rear diff fluid this weekend as well. (can't hurt and I want to know for sure when it was last replaced)

So much for a relaxing weekend

Still wondering about this before I get started this weekend. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Bummer

2. Use only what is recommended for diesels. Cummins/Fleetguard is a good choice.

3. Probably ought to drain the reservoir refill with correct fluid, and bleed the brakes. Right rear first, left rear, right front, left front.

4. Again, Fleetguard.

5. Check the seal under the cap.

6. I would use a garden hose and a good degreaser before aI went after it with a power wash. Watching the guy from Hotsy give a demo and usage instructions on a cutaway of an engine and watching the water getting blown past the seals was enough for me to be #1 careful when using any pressure washer on an engine. Also be real careful of electrical connections.

7. Get yourself a tube of RTV and Get-R-Done. Hint - drive the truck for a whiel to heat the lube up beforeyou drain it. Leave the bottles of new fluid (Friction modifier for the LSD) in the sun to get warm as well so it will flow better when refilling.
