Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Millage

I'm wondering what everyone gets as an average MPG. I have a 99 std cab 4. 11 gears, 6spd and my milage seems to be irratic. some tanks I'll get well over 500 miles. I do 56 miles round trip a day ... and other than that just farm use. Most ALL of my 130K miles have been open road.

Worst mileage towing 27' camper was 11-12 mpg. Normal driving now back and forth to work 18-19 mpg. Best mileage ever interstate, cruise on 65mph, was 23. 3 mpg. But 23. 3 is not the norm of everyday driving. Pulling our 22' camper to and from TiM, 16. 3 mpg. ( These are all hand calculated)

I average 19-20MPG with my truck. I also have the best combo for mileage, 2WD 6speed short bed. Anything over 75 kills though!

@75 overhead shows 19. 9 on flat land.

I got a steady 25 on the comp tonight. Running @ 55 dead on on the flat. Which is about 1570rpms. Hand calculation and the avg mpg from the comp agree. Even with over sized tires the comp reads a tad low. But it would read high with standard tires.

Milage

I have consistently got 21+ mpg. on my trips to the western

slope in Colorado. This is over 2 passes and Grand Mesa all

over 11,000 feet elevation. I set the cruise when possible at

75 mph. and let the rest of the world fly by. If I bump it up to

80+ mph. the mileage falls off 2-3 mpg.

The Van Aaken box helps the mileage about 2 mpg. probably

why it does good at 75 mph. That seems to be a sweet spot

for the motor 2000+ rpm.

I am impressed with the mileage none of my friends with

Fords or Chevys can match it!

16-17 if Ive got the box on and driving it like I stole it, 20-21 with the box off and my wife in the truck. Empty, on flat highway, on cruise with a tail wind I got 23. 3 once... a long time ago.

My 98 1/2 with automatic, 285/75/16's will only get around 15. 3 at it's best but it will do that loaded or unloaded, (topper and small trailer) to or from Colo. If I run it over 85 if will drop to about 14. 6. For some reason it doesn't change much but IT WILL HAUL.....

Mileage

The quality of diesel fuel has more to do with your mileage than most people believe. That is why it is all over the place. Good fuel = good mileage, lousy fuel = lousy mileage!

Amen to that one, I only use 2 local stations. Hit the road and find a bad fuel, 12-15, hate it... ... ... ... lol.

16. 5 to & from work & 15. 5 towing the car last weekend. I got 17 or so unloaded going up north & back, but its pretty consistant. I always buy @ the same station though.

I think mine depends largely on elevation. In College Station, where I go to school, at around 500' above sea level I get 14-17. At home, in Midland, about 2700' above sea level, I get about 15-18. I've been working in the Santa fe area this summer and I've been getting 18-20 mpg. I think it's around 6000' above sea level here.

Mine is a 98. 5 with 91K on the clock. About 80% of my miles are in town driving (Portland Oregon area). I'm consistently in the 14. 5 - 15. 5 mpg. range. On a trip to Spokane and back, I got 19. 0 averaging 70 mph. Pulling my travel trailer to Montana and back I averaged about 12. 5. Not bad considering the two steep mountain passes and the Columbia River gorge head winds.
