Have a '98. 5 Quad Cab with a problem with the Driver side mirror shaking, vibrating and just not holding steady when going on down the road. This is really noticeable when there is alot of wind but is present at all times to various degress. Had a '94 with the same problem.

Both trucks were back to the dealer on numerous occassions for attempted repairs but nothing to date has worked.

Was told the last time that took this in that Chrysler knows about this and is still working on the problem. Working since '94?! Was also told that dealer has nothing else to try to correct problem.

If this can not be fixed, are there aftermarket mirrors that can be installed that will have all the present features, heat, remote control and etc. Was looking at the mirrors that Ford has with the turn signal light. Not that keen on putting a Ford product on the Dodge but want to get this corrected.

It may seem minor but this is annoying.

been there, done that (and then some)

I had experienced vibration in varying degrees in the driver side mirror on my '98. 5 Ram (black plastic, heated, Mickey Mouse ear style). The condition was somewhat worsened after the installation of several different bug shields that I had tried.

However, after I installed my second generation Power Vision mirrors (heated, electrically adjustable and extendable), I have not witnessed any mirror vibration. :D:D:D:D Even extended, there is only very minimal vibration in the mirrors.

[BTW, I removed the bug shield from my Ram when I added the Air Bulldog induction hood... well before I added the Power Vision mirrors]

John,

Thanks for the information on the mirrors that you purchased. Can you send me a link where I can check these mirrors out? This has been an annoyance since I purchased the truck. Tried jamming some plastic between the mirror and housing for a while. This worked but the plastic fell out so had some maintenance with this backyard fix.

BTW, did you know that the mirrors are plastic? At least that is what they appear to be to me. Could this be part of the problem with the vibration? Are the mirrors that you installed made of glass?

There was a TSB on the earlier (94-97) mirror vibration problem. I don't know if the newer style could be repaired the same way. A bug shield will cause a mirror to vibrate. Sounds like you might need to try a different dealer.

Are you referring to the mirror housings? If so, yes, they are plastic... so are the Power Vision mirrors, so are the X-Mount mirrors and so are the OE factory tow mirrors. In all cases the previously listed mirrors have glass mirror surfaces.

Here's the problem; the OE mirror housings are made of very thin plastic without the proper structural bracing to prevent vibration (within the plastic mirror housing... the omission of a mounting backup plate is probably a contributing factor as well). One look at the structural integrity of the Power Vision or X-Mount mirrors and you will quickly understand the quality difference between them and the OE mirrors.

hhmmm

My driver side mirror vibrates, too. The problem doesn't appear to be the mirror, but the door that supports the mirror. Between the door hinges and the weatherstripping nothing is quite as tight or as aligned as it could be. I cannot verify, but I think adjusting the door will help.

BTW, this is with the old style chrome and the new style "Mickey Mouse" heated mirrors installed on the same door.

X-Mount

Lucerix makes the x-Mount mirror system. I cannot comment first hand on the X-Mount but the Lucerix units we install on buses are excellent quality.

OK big disclaimer time here. I am not am employee of nor a compensated representative of Lucerix.

John,

I'll have to stop by and look at those mirrors..... My drivers side mirror has got a hairline crack in it (From what I do not know). I need extendable mirrors, but I'm sure I'd rather spend the $$ on injectors next... Ya still got your original mirrors???

tsb

hey rm right after i bought my 98. 5 i had this problem and found the solution in my first copy of tdr , showed this to service adv. and made him mad , they put a brace inside the door at the mirror mounting point behind the door panel and it helped alot . just my 2cents

My factory mirrors on my 96 (Chrome power) would shake- both sides idle and then again at highway speeds. I've since installed the kit for the flip to tow mirrows and they don't vibrate at all. :)

They are rock solid, work great... ... if only they were power:( . But hey that's what passengers are for!!!:D :D

Does anyone know that the issue was that 'ducman' found the notice in? Looked through some back issues that have here and could not find it. Course may have overlooked it also. Checked out the site for the X-Mount mirrors but if they will vibrate also may just stay with what I have now. No sense in speeding some extra money on something that may or may not work. Plenty of other things to install on the truck!

A comment on mirror vibration...

On my truck I have installed the stock power mirrors (came that way), X-mount mirrors and now the flip up towing mirrors.

The stock mirror, driver side only, had a high frequency, low amplitude vibration to it. It "buzzed" and made stuff behind me slightly blurry. This is affected by speed and stereo volume. :)

The x-mount and the factory flip ups both have a low frequecy, high amplitude vibration. It os one of 3 reasons I returned the x-mounts. These mirrors (both) bounce ( actually swing back and forth on the pivot slightly) on medium to large bumps. I think it might have something to do with the rake of the truck and the fact that the mirrirs swing in a plane parallel to the bottom edge of the body.

Lucerix X-Mount Mirrors

Installed Lucerix X-Mount mirrors last weekend and am very pleased with them so far. These things are HUGE... like looking thru "Picture Windows"! I installed 4" stick-on convex blind-spot mirrors in the lower outside corner of the Lucerix mirrors. The corner angle of the Lucerix mirror matched the radius of the 4" mirrors and looks nice, as well as, providing good visibility.

The new mirrors have very little vibration and are significantly better than the OEM mirrors. Performance is the same whether or not the mirrors are extended. Vehicle speed does not seem to affect whether there is, or is not, any vibration, however, rough road surfaces do.
