How do you tighten the mirrors on a 96 dodge ram? I have the ones with the black plastic cover on them and I dont know how to get it off.

I'm having the same problem. When I put the extended mirrors on, my driver side mirror blows in. I need to know how to tighten this up. Thanks!

If you get an answer, please e-mail me at my address.

Hyper, What is your mirror doing?

Hyper, I've been thru that with my 97. The clipon mirrors worked the posts loose. Dodge doesn't sell any repare parts - only a complete mirror. I removed the mirror and took the black cover loose and saw the screw holes had stripped out. The head doesn't come of the shaft without breaking it(that's what Dodge told me)and without the head off, the black cover won't come off far enough to fix the threads. So Dodge got to warranty both mirrors!
After I got them, I went to a glass shop and got a flat replacement(like the driver side) and put it in the right side. The glass glues to a plastic flange that is fixed to the accuator some way. I didn't try to go deeper to see how the rest came apart for fear of breaking it.
The 4 screws that stripped were about 6mm self tapping screws. If you found slightly bigger ones, you might be able to get them in without taking the black cover all the way off. Craig

ok let me clear something up. It si not the mirror housing that is loose it is the bar it hooks to that goes to the door behind a black plastic cover. If I can get the cover off I can fix it. But I dont want to break the cover. How does this cover come off??

Hyper, read my post again - slower and carefully - especially the first paragraph, and everything should be cleared up! Dodge didn't intend for anyone to make repairs under that cover without breaking something to get the cover off.

ok cool i reread it and you said you took your cover loose. Does it snap on and will it break trying to get it loose? I dont need to take it al the way off as I believe I can fix it if I can get to it.

You have to take the whole mirror off the door. There's a few screws inside on the door liner(easy to find),pry the liner away from the door(put tape on a small prybar so it doesn't scratch the paint),slide the liner off over the door handle and reach in to unplug the window and lock wires. I think there were three 10mm nuts holding the mirror assembly on to the door. Then there were 2 or 3 screws from the back side of the aluminum base holding the black cover on. You can't just pry the black cover off when the mirror is still on the truck. Under the cover is a plate with 4 self tapping screws that go into the alum. base which holds the post in between. The post has a detent and spring setup that is supposed to hold the mirror in its normal position but the 4 screws were pulling out allowing the post to move around. I was trying to get the cover slid down the post but couldn't with the mirror head on. And I couldn't figure out how to get the head off. That's when I called Dodge and they said the head doesn't come off - if any part is broke, they only sell a complete mirror assembly. Beings it was in warranty, I let them replace both mirrors.
If you're determined enough, I think the cover would slide off far enough to reach in there with an open end wrench and put bigger seld tapping screws in. The screw hole aren't drilled all the way through the base. Another idea would be to drill and countersink from the back side of the base and put flathead machine screws in with only the nuts under the cover to hold with a wrench. I'd use loctite too!
I called some glass shops beings they work on doors and mirror and they didn't know anything. Good Luck! Craig

I had the same problem with my '97. I took the door panel off and removed the mirror, got the screws retightened and it lasted about 6 mo. . I then replced them with Power Vision mirrors, Very nice, power extend and retract and power adjust. I still have a good drivers side mirror that I took off if anyoe needs one.
