I would think long and hard before you use that thing. Some states reserve that privilege for emergency vehicles only. You get caught using something like that and they might decide to throw away the key after they take all your money and toys. . :(

One of the Indy TV stations did a piece on one of those a while back. The traffic signals dept for Indy was invited to. After a little testing was done. They found out the device only worked about 40% of the time. But at the same time the traffic signals sections was doing a capture of the signal to find its signature. Now all traffic lights in Indy have been programed to not switch on this boxes signal. :-laf

Mundgyver, I dont know what or if anything could be done by an LEO on this. I've looked it up on the state website, and I couldnt find anything about it. I could be wrong though, I have been before. :D

Phillip, I dont know howmany lights are programmed for this around here. I know SOME are just from seeing ambulances going down the road.

It might not be worth it, but I STILL hate red lights. :D

Typically, you won't find a law for the specific product... This thing is a possession is ok but USE is not. If I was the cop, I'd use laws like:

Reckless endangerment

Interfering with Emergency services

Interfering with State/city/county government equip.

Reckless driving

Neg Driving

... . and a host of others

Then I'd take box as evidence... book driver... and hit the local donut shop to share the story about the guy with the box who is sitting in jail.

The charges may or may not fly but the cost wouldn't be my problem...

DITTO on what Guava said,

Here in Oregun, life will become very bad if they find out you have one these things and are using it. I don't know what the fine would be, but just the thought of someone taking my driving privileges away from me would be enough to steer clear of one of these.

On the flip side though, if I was in a position such as a police officer or fire marshal or some public job where this device was needed for me to respond to an emergency situation, then yes I would probably own one. I would have to be able to justify owning one.

Radar detectors, yep I own one. Only time I use it is on a cross country trip. If I am going to get a ticket, I want to know I been looked at. If I deserve it, no problem. But it is a judgment thing on the cops part with no proof other than (he thought) my was speed was not right and my detector was silent, then I will fight the ticket.

I would check your laws before you think about using something like that. Judges have a nasty way of making you pay for something you thought should be OK to do. Just my input. I'm not saying it right or wrong, just be careful if you decide to use something like that. We all work way to hard for our money. ;)

Yeah, my company just did a big preemption installation project involveing a similiar product by 3m, opticom. The 3m version is coded so products like the "mirt" that send out a zero code won't work.

They do not work as fast as you think. The signal controller is seperate from the premtion device. So the device can't overrule the safety of the intersection, although fire, police, and EMT's seem to wish they worked a little faster, but it's public safety first.

As far as using it for personal reason, let's put it this way. My company has one of the good emitters, and I was told if I ever take it for personal use, well let's just say I won't take it for a joy ride. There is a reason they are sold to fire, police, and EMT's only. It took alot of work for my company to get one, and we test the things.

Interesting article -seems like questionable results for $300, and as been said you might end up in the pokey while the laughing cops munches down a few donuts with his buddies...
