Probably going to ruffle some feathers out there ... . but I am curious if any of you 3rd Generation guys miss the rattle of the old 12valve or 24valve? I currently own an 03 which has been a great truck but I got to tell ya ... ..... I sure miss the rattle of my 02 24vavle. :( The other day I had a 24valve pull up next to me at the stop light and man that dude was rattlin!!! I felt like tucking my tail and turning in shame. Dont get my wrong I have made some modifications to my exhaust to wake it up a little bit BUT it aint got no rattle. :( Anyway this probably is a waste of a thread but I was curious if any of my diesel brethren feel my pain??

Secret: I have honestly thought about keeping my 03 truck BUT replacing the motor with an old 24 valve. I have even gone as far as asking my mechanic if it could be done and how much. :-laf My wife would absolutely kill me if she read this so keep it a secret! Thanks for your time!!

This is my first diesel to own myself, but I have been driving diesel pickups, tandem dumps,18 wheelers, and heavy equipment for years at work. So I can say "yes" I miss the rattle on my ride. My wife loves the quite, and I do also at times like in line at fast food place while placing a order. Otherwise it would not bother me a bit if it still sounded like the older CTD. :D

I noticed that today :) Went after work and looked at an '05 dually... loaded  Lots o room for the family, but damn was it quiet! I'm on the edge with whether I move up or not. This thread was too funny as I thought the same thing..... love to hear in rattlin' Thats how the dog knows I'm home :-laf

I know I am gettting older now. But I can honestly say that I like the "new" peace and quite with the same "old" power. Previously have owned a 92,95,97,99.

nanner nanner nanner Ive go the rattle and LOVE IT :-laf I dont know if the whole quiet diesel will strike a beat with me. And a straight pipe 3G just isnt the same :( but I guess its better than having a hemi! :D

YES!!!!!

I am very envious of the 24v's. I've got a 91 and a 93 still and crank them every once in awhile just to hear them. I'll buy a 98-02 at some point to have a 24v to play with.

I can remember quite a few trips to National City Bank via the drive-through when the teller asked me to turn off my truck (2000 RAM 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 CTD), as the "lady" two lanes over could not hear her conversation with her teller. I love my quite '03, but I occasionally miss the rattle of my '00.

One more vote for the diesel cackle of my '94, which I miss alot.

My wife however does NOT miss it.....

If I could get my motor & injectors to run properly by reflashing the computer to impart a single injection event & the byproduct was to get that cackle, I would not hestitate.

Hello box manufacturers... .

Here is a marketing idea for you all. Incresed power. . and traditional diesel music... .

I think alot of us would buy one. :-laf

Inside the cab of my '04 seems to be as loud as the '99 I traded to get it, but when I roll down the window it doesn't get any louder than with them up. It sure is different not having to turn the truck off a McDonald's drive thru. I still have the '92 that the muffler fell off of, so I still get my "rattle" fix.

If my 01' didn't have the weak VP44 pump, I would never have sold it. Too many repeat failures with that pump. I really miss the rattle too. One drove past me tonight as I was out walking the dog. It made me stop and stare... ... ...

I'm just waiting for the day we see a 98 12V in a 2003+ 3rd Gen... It would be a lot simpler to hook up. There have been a few hydro-locked 3rd Gens on eBay from down in Florida and I'm sure there are a few from California now. One of them was only in 3 feet of water and looked pretty much brand new... however the motor was toast. Someday someone will do it... hell it might be a new trend especially if they start using Mercedes Diesel Power in 2008!

I've seen a shop somewhere that specializes in installing 12V Cummins into older trucks... I'm sure they'd do a 3rd Gen if someone wasn't watching their EGTs and had a melt down. I'll try and find the website link.

I do at times miss the rattle of the earlier engines but at the same time enjoy the sound of the new engine. With regards to the box manufacturers getting involved with the sound of this engine, how about a noise button? Kind of like the smoke button thread that came up a few years ago. I had an '01 prior to my '03 so what did I lose with the rattle? I have more power and better mileage. In my case my '01 was more bark than bite. A fair trade for me. The quest for a quieter engine is not surprising given today's trucks with heated leather seats, dual zone climate control and the like. Significant departure from my definition of a truck in my formative years. As an aside, if you told me in my formative years that I would be driving a diesel pickup now I would have accused you using mind altering drugs. I couldn't tell you where DC came up with the idea for a quieter engine but you can bet their research indicated that such a thing would be profitable or we would still have the old 24V. Anyone remember the old Steve Earle song that mentioned a $20K pickup truck. A friend and I thought WOW!, you could get a brand new truck and do this and this and that and something else and still have money left over. Ahhhhh the good old days.

Error Message:message too short Hmmm, the message I entered is to short? Wonder why I've never encountered that before, hint, hint. :-laf Guess I'll ramble mindlessly for a few words, add a few smilies :D  and try again.

I never owned a 12 valve or a 2nd gen truck, but I do love that diesel rattle! In some ways I'm jealous. There are a couple of 2nd gen trucks running around where I work, so I get a fair share of rattle every day! And when it's cold as heck in the morning my engine rattles just like a 2nd gen... love it!

Response

Thanks for all of the responses. Looks like I am not alone in regards to missing the rattle. Klenger I appreciate the "sound" attachment... ... it brought a tear to my eye. :-laf I still remember the days I could pull up at the truck stop and get props from the "Big Trucks" with my rattlin... but those days are now gone. My neighbor even misses my old truck because it would wake him up in the morning. He now uses an alarm to wake him up since my 03 is a "sleeper". :-laf Oh well I guess I will have to adapt to my 03. Thanks again for all of the responses!!! Cheers to good ole rattlin CUMMINS!!!
