I have, both, a 91. 5 and an '03. Owned both since new. The 91. 5 sounds like a REAL TRUCK!!! It's got PERSONALITY!!! You "really" know you are driving a truck.

The new one, on the other hand, is very civilized and hardly obnoxious, at all. It does everything right. Good power and reasonably comfortable but, definately lacking in personality.

I've tried to give it some more personality by installing a Magnaflow 14" muffler and an AFE ProGuard-7 intake system with Torque Tube and removing the silencer ring. Now, you seem to hear the turbo more than the engine or exhaust note. Sounds more like the intake of a jet engine than a diesel engine.

My '03 is like having a Harley-Davidson with quiet mufflers!!! What's wrong with that picture?

I understand how the new engines would appeal to quite a few people. I'm just not one of them.

Two of my friends, both Duramax owners, think I'm nuts to like the louder engines and don't like riding in either of my trucks. The one guy thinks his Duramax is way too loud and is thinking of getting rid of it. The other offered to pay for some psychological testing, for me. Neither can understand how I could like the loud engines. (By the way, I'm no kid. I'll be 59 in April).

Last summer, I took an 8053 mile trip (Thunder in Muncie, etc. ) with my '03 and trailer and hardly ever had the radio on. Had the windows down and listened to the engine humming down the road. Even though the new truck doesn't have that "high quality" diesel sound, it's still better than nothing.

I remember, a few years ago, watching a TV program narrated by Jay Leno (of the Tonight Show). There were 3 very high dollar sports cars driving down a closed-off highway in northern Nevada. He mentioned that the reason people bought these types of cars was that you were re-introduced to the driving experience, with them. It seems the manufacturers of many new vehicles make a serious effort to try to insulate you, as much as

possible, from the "driving experience". It seems the more manufacturers can simulate driving to sitting at home in your family room, in your Lazy Boy recliner, the better the vehicle is. I know a number of people feel that way.

I, also, think that's why Harley's and older Cummins engines are as popular as they are with some of us.

Well, "That's my opinion, and I'm sticking too it".

Joe F. (Buffalo).

I also miss the rattle of the "96", "98", & "01" that I had previously owned.
The "04" will never have the same rattle due to the compression ratio that it runs.

Here's the cure for those going through withdrawl ... http://www.klenger.net/dodge/2nd-gen-reference/isb-start.wav

That's not a cure, that's a bandaid.

If I could get my motor & injectors to run properly by reflashing the computer to impart a single injection event & the byproduct was to get that cackle, I would not hestitate.

Agreed 100%. It'd likely improve MPG as well.

Hello box manufacturers... .

Here is a marketing idea for you all. Incresed power. . and traditional diesel music... .

I think alot of us would buy one. :-laf

I might even pay to beta test that one if I can be the first to have it.

If I wanted a truck that sounded like a gasser, I would have bought a gasser.

Miss my 95

Sold my 95 4x4 CTD 2500 to follow the "bosses" orders :{ , bought the "03" 3500, I call it the sisssssssy truck, even the horn sounds like it belongs in San Franciso. :-laf

The 95 sounded and rode like a TRUCK!!

As the ole saying goes,"Women can't live withem, can't live withouthem!

I like Hyde's idea of a noise button,in fact I have though of the same thing before. A flip of the switch at the drive-thru places for noise suppression and then a flip for the manly beast thats in you. Why couldn't they made it 50% noise reduction instead of 84%. Give me the best of both worlds. :D

The quest for a quieter engine is not surprising given today's trucks with heated leather seats, dual zone climate control and the like.

Thosre are just more things to go wrong in my eyes! :-laf

I dont know about the rest of you fellas but I bought the truck for the power not the title of having a diesel motor (well a lil) but still I will take alot of rattle before I give up my horsepower!! "say NO to GAS" :-laf

It is a pretty nasty horn note. I miss the horns on the mid-80s Chevy sedans

I'm in the process of installing air horns ;) I like the stock sound but I need a little bit more BITE and im envious of YO HOOT's setup! Oo.

Probably going to ruffle some feathers out there ... . but I am curious if any of you 3rd Generation guys miss the rattle of the old 12valve or 24valve?

Southbound

Absolutely not... the best thing Cummins did was quiet down the rattle and add more power. I've owned a '92, '97, and a '00, but love the '03's quiet! :D The main reason I traded a perfect, low mileage '00 3500.

My understanding is It's not the compression ratio, it's using a pilot injection that quiets these pups down. Therefore, if we can get Marco to can the Catcher program and start on a Scratcher ECM program that does away with the pilot injection we should be back to rattll'n rams. Probably need an in-cab dial'o'matic for drive throughs, when wife is along, and for Sunday-go-to-meeting times. :)

According to the last issue of TDR the 04s only use pilot below 2000 rpm and when not under a load.

noise button

i thought of a noise button about a year back. I have a question, kind of, doesn't the pilot injection only work above a certain IAT? If that is the case, then could you some how wire up a resistor into a switch that told the ecm the temp was different then it would shut off the pilot injection, then when you wanted it quiet you could turn it off and bypass the resistor. Could that work or would it set a code for changing temerature to fast?

I was of the understanding that a lot of the rattle on the old 24 v engines came from the firing of the injection pump. The HPCR does away with that.
