I don't know how to start this other than I am nearly totally ignorant when it comes to diesel motors (most motors, in fact).
4 weeks ago I purchased a 2000 QC 2500 4x4, AT and 3. 55, 52,000 miles. I came from a Toyota TRD 4x4. I am going to buy a travel trailer soon.
Started out as a great truck. Drove it home, cleaned it, waxed it and realized I didn't know anything about this truck. Started reading on maintenance and so on. Bought it due to the reputation of the Cummins. We have them at work and they are awesome. Dad has a powerstroke and didn't want anything like it. Can't afford a duramax and am waiting to see about reliability.
Anyway here is the timeline to my problem:
2 weeks ago: Jumped my wife's car (followed manual), fueled up the next day.
1 week ago: same tank of fuel, the engine started missing under load (can't duplicate in neutral) at about 2100 rpm.
Since I don't know anything, followed advice. Added some additive to the fuel thinking I had some bad fuel (what is bad fuel anyway?).
Things got better until 2 days ago. Fueled up again at a different location and the miss or surging started again. I got on the freeway and got on it. Once at about 2200 rpm it would surge and it didn't seem to have the same power. Does this repeatedly still. Is fine when I drive it easy, never getting to that rpm range.
I have had many so-called knowledgable people give me advice. Fuel filter, fuel pump, water in fuel, and so on. Some have told me to disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes to reboot the computer (I know this works in gas motors when you have done some sort of mod on the motor).
Since purchasing I have already replaced a gasket on the front differential and the seal on the transfer case for the front driveshaft.
Reading posts here has scared me about going to the dealer.
I am frustrated and confused. Can anyone help?
Thanks
