i hope someone can help

95 -5 speed 173000 miles

i bought this truck used over ebay had it shiped in from tx when it came in i was out of town and my wife picked it up for me.

she check it out on the outside, started it and every thing semed ok singed the bill of lading and the truck was mine.

630am the next moring i got to see my new used truck. ran outside and started it right up. ran good sounded ,good look good, what a good deal i got . . well!!!! when i took it up to 1800 rpm it missed out and white smoke like crazy. now i have 6 cummins trucks and i havent had any thing go wrong with any of them. . so the frist thing i did was change the fuel filter. .

now out of just habbit i alwayls pour the fuel into a jar and look at it. mmmmm... fuel seams to be a little red???? well maybe someone put a little farm fuel in it. i mean it did come from tx. it could have happend..... so we did the test, pour it out on the ground light a shop towel and see if it will burn!!!!! welll... . you bet !!!!!! it was gas, not diesel . 35 gallons of fuel all the way to the top. . so i drained the tank put on a new filter and hope for the best... now i have had gas in one or two of my trucks before but never this much and i didnt know how long this truck was driven like this.

started it up ran it up 1800 rpm same thing missing out and white smoke. .

the next day i called the shipper and thanked him for the full tank of fuel and asked him if they alwased fill up the trucks the sell... well... ... he told me no, the trucking co. does not want more than 1/4 tank in any cars or trucks that they haul. well... ... . my truck driver did call and say he would be 2 days late because his truck broke down and he was going to go home because he was so close to home. mmmmmm... ..... maybe i should check the miles ... ... . called shipper and 300 miles off... ...

well to get to the point if you sign the bill of lading it yours!!!!!!!

now back to the problem, white smoke( so i was told) means starving for fuel or timming. so we check the timming and it was off 3 degrees fast so we set back to 14. 5 that didnt help.....

started checking fuel pressure at the fuel filter... ... 0... ... well we found the problem lift pump!!!!!! so we replace it knowing that we just knew this was it ... . nope stilled had the same problem.

came in and was reading my tdr mag. and low and behold some one else was having the same problem ... ... white smoke at high rpms he said to check the fuel return valve. so i did sure enough it was stuck. replaced it. oh boy here we go !!!!!! nope still had same problem

oh by the way after replacing the lift pump we got 30 lbs of pressure at filter. . both sides.

i could crack the lines and it would miss out like it should ... . but 4 and 5 sound a little week.

pulled injectures today and had a pop off check, and spray pattern done. pattern looks good and pop off at 3300 to 3500 on all six

all lines have been check for leaks, volume checks ok, return ok

all lines tight no leaks all i got left is the pump!!!!!!!!1

if any one has any input please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A friend of mine filled his CTD with gas while dreaming about girls and it quit running soon after and he had to be towed in. After draining and filling with #2 it has run great with no problems.

for all you guys that read my long story

after all the things that i checked on this truck, we found the problem or at least fix it anyway

after having the injecters checked i put them back in,blew out all the over flow tubes and bolts , and reinstalled them . i also replaced my return valve because my was not working right, when i had checked it the frist time. i took it apart and fix it but i wasnt sure it was working right. so i replaced it. put it all back on and notice that i had two bolts missing out of the intake that held the fuel lines on. so i replaced them too.

i also replced all the washers under the fuel deliverly valves. they didnt look bad but my pump man told me that if one had a grove in it or warped it let fuel go back into the pump instead of to the injecters.

afer all this it was time to start it up. well... ... ... . still had smoke.

but it sounded a little diffent so i backed it out side, held it at 1800 rpms... ... hey no smoke... ... 2000 rpms lots of smoke but trying to clear up..... i dumped some diesel add. in the tank 4 times more than it needed held it 2000 rpms and it got better and better

so and end to this story

2000 rpms no SMOKE

2100 just alittle

2200 a little more but not bad

oh yes while i had the injecters out i ran a comp. check 400 in all 6 holes

i hope this info. helps anybody else that has this problem in the future
