mix EGT gauges and thermocouples?

I was wondering what the general consesus is about mixing thermocouples and EGT gauges. Is it possible to use a different brand thermocouple for a specific gauge or is it recommended to stay within brand names?

The name brand does not matter. The "Type" does. On my Autometer guage it came with a Type "K" thermocouple. I work for a company that produces thermocouples. I could use any of our Type "K" T/C's on the gauge. But a Type "J" or any other letter would not read correctly.
