Everybody seems to go all Synthetic or all dino. with their oils. I heard (a while back) that mixing 20% syn. w/ your reg. oil gives 80% of the protection of running all syn. (@ 1/5 the cost).
I used one Qt. of syn. + four Qts. reg. in my 94 Ram (360 gas) for years. Never had any oil tests done so I can't compare the differences. Just a little potential insurance I guess.
Anybody else tried this?

It will mix fine. This is what most auto guys do that put synthetic in the tranz because it takes an act of God to get all the old fluid out. Eventualy all the old is replaced by synthetic after a few changes.

You can mix them, especially if they are the same brand and are likely to have similar additive packages. You should realize better cold start protection, an increase in overall lubricity, and probably improved shear resistance similar to that of a commercial synthetic blend. But you can't extend your oil change interval with a semi-synthetic. The petro component will contain the same oxidation targets as conventional oil and a 20% blend will not have the full shear resistance of an all synthetic product.

Well I don't know about mixing oils. I have always been told not to. I run Synthetic in everything I own and it burned me one day. I have a XR600 Honda dirt bike. I have always run synthetic in it and one day the ignition wire that runs into the case, and the little rubber booty that holds it in place got knocked out by a twig or something. By the time we noticed it I was way down on oil. We drained oil from 5 other bikes (all non-synthetic) and put it in mine to get me back to the truck. After about 20 minutes of riding, the motor seezed. We let it cool down and then took off again. Once again it seezed. Severe cylinder wall damage.

That was my experience. It took place nine years ago and maybe now the oils are compatable. I would definitely check around before I did something like this. Good luck and this is only what happened to me. I have never heard of this happening to anyone else.
