I ran about 12-15 gallons through my '01 over about 40k miles, which isn't a lot. Was running DD2 injectors at the time then I pulled them before trading in the truck. Injectors were clean, no buildup other than the usual layer of soot. I attribute that to running fuel conditioner at almost every fillup.

I usually don't put more than 6 quarts in at fillup. Never saw any increase in smoke, although when I put used Amsoil in once I got a little blue smoke before spoolup 'cause that stuff has a high flash point.

If you check the Alternate Fuels forum I think there's some threads about it there.

I've heard of a few people mixing in used engine oil with there diesel. Will this work? Anyone know the long term effects of doing this?

I wouldn't do that IMO. Used oil is full of combustion byproducts and many other not-so-nice things that are too fine to be captured by your oil filter. Remember that oil was changed because it was full of contaminates and losing its lubricating properties. Don't stuff it into your high pressure injection system.

If you are trying to lubricate your pump there are safe products for that. If you are trying to get rid of your waste oil there should be some place near you that will take it.
