This weekend I am going to change out my engine and diff oil.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel SYN 5W-40 for the motor and Mobil 1 Syn 75W-90 for the Diff.

Mobil says when using their Syn 5W-40 they recommend changing out the oil using the MAX mileage between changes (15k) I pull my 5er on a regular bases.

What say you all

currently 27K miles on the truck

I see your in Fla, look in your owners manual, there is a graph that shows the temps you can run 5w40 vrs 15w40. If 5w40 goes high enough for your temps, go for it.

Also read the part about the difference between schedule A and schedule B. See which one your type driving meets. if you have a lot of short trips, or run in a lot of dirt you might need to change more often. I also pull my 5er on a regular bases, but all my day to day driving is 30 miles each way on a highway. I will be changing 1 year or 15K miles, which ever comes first.

I recently contacted Chevron & Schaeffer's Oil Co. regarding the length of time you could leave the oil in the crankcase. Both companies said not to go over one year with the same oil in the crankcase. I think you could, easily, go 15,000 miles (within the one year time frame).

My latest oil change interval was 9626 miles (a few days less than one year), using Chev. Delo-400, 15X40, CI-4+. I ran a used oil analysis & the sample came back still in good, useable condition.

The Mobil 1 should be fine at 15,000 miles.

You may want to go to BITOG (bob is the oil guy.com). There is a wealth of lubrication-related information on that site.

40 weight oil is 40 weight oil, No need to worry about that part. I'am more than confident the Mobil synthetic 5-40 could go alot further than 15,000 miles. On a new truck DC might not agree for warranty concerns. To be safe on warranty concerns you could always do Oil analysis.

Personally, If I lived in florida or any where it never got colder than zero degrees F. I would just use regular Mobil 15-40 and change it at the required maintenance schedule. That way DC can not bulk at warranty issues. It's also less expensive.

DC does recommend 5-40 synthetic oil (Says right in your owners manual) but you still have to change it at scheduled maintenance intervals for warranty purposes.

Just to throw my . 02 into the mix. I put Mobil Delvac 1 in last June and will be changing it out this coming June. I know I only put about 6,000 miles on in the last 10 months but the 12 month changeout is my "comfort zone". I also changed out the filter every 3,700 miles. I know I am going to get flamed for the change interval. That's ok, suits on!!!

Dave- shields down for a second- Did you notice anything positive from the change to synthetic? I tried the Mobil Truck & SUV when it was rated, and it didn't seem to do much for me. AGAIN... NO OIL WARS HERE, should anybody get their feelings hurt!

Dave Hess,

Since you are not driving that much (6000/8000 per year), rather than 'investing' in an expensive synthetic oil, why not just use a quality conventional oil, such as Chevron Delo, Shell Rotella, etc. You, easily & safely, can run those oils for 8000 miles/year.

If that concerns you, why not run a used oil analysis towards the end of the oil change interval. I've gone 9626 miles on the Chev. Delo & the analysis showed the oil was still in good shape.

That would save you a few bucks on oil.

In FL, unless you're going to head north in cold weather (yeah, right!) I'd stick with 15W40 unless you're running CJ-4 requirements, which are 5W40 anyway. At 6-8000 miles per year, I wouldn't have bought the Amsoil 5W30 HDD. But I drive 30K plus normally, and have put over 20K on mine since I bought it in Oct of last year, owing to a 7K vacation to TX and CA. Of course, you could put a bypass filter on and test it at 6 months or so, change your filters when you test it, and only change the oil when your test results say to do so. I doubt you'd have to change the oil very often, as long as you ran the truck enough in normal service to keep the moisture out, thus keeping the acid level down and TBN up. Probably not worth the money, but it would be easy to change filters versus oil.
