Noting the smaller size of the 3rd Gen Intake cone filter and our insatiable appetite for more boost and larger turbos.
I thought I could stick a 2nd gen AFE magnum cone filter in place of the smaller 3rd gen cone filter. The space provided with the AFE intake on 3rd gen trucks is much smaller than the 2nd gens thus the smaller filter and an even smaller intake area on 04. 5 and 05 models.
So I took my intake apart and discovered the diameter of the 3rd gen AFE filter is 4" vs. the 4. 5" of the 2nd gen counterpart. 1st challenge install an insert into the filter so it could mount up and seal with no further modifications to the already cramped mounting surface and area.
I went out to the local Rural King and purchased some rubber type hose joints used in plumbing in 4" diameter thinking they would provide me with the sleeve I was looking for. Well that didnt work the hose couplings were too large and did not work.
I did rememeber I had a 90* 4" rubber elbow that I had left over from a attempted and botched homemade torque tube project.
Voila... . It fit perfectly inside the larger AFE 2nd gen filter. I cut 1" off of the straight part of the elbow to match up to the mounting surface on the filter (where the clamp goes). I also used a little adhesive to secure the newly created seal into position for mounting.
Next up installation.
First off I knew that I was not going to be able to get the filter into the proper position for mounting (due to its larger size) with the actual filter pipe in its mounted position.
I removed the 3 screws that secure the intake pipe to the intake housing.
This enabled me to back the pipe out of intake housing and contort the filter into its proper position for mounting.
I choked the filter up on the pipe a little more than the 3rd gen cone was used to.
I also lubricated the homemade sleeve (rubber boot) a little bit so I could orientate it to my liking and install the larger cone without issue.
I used the larger hose clamp that was provided with the 2nd gen cone filter.
Everything tightened up after ward and took it for a ride to Taco Bell... .
Right off the bat, I noticed more turbo noise, sounded like the turbo was spooling up quicker and the truck seemed to be less "surgy" when I used the go pedal, almost like there was now a more proper amount of air to supply the B1 charger.
Anyhow, I like this BOMB and thought I would let you guys know.
I'll try and post some pictures later.
I'll also post a PN for the 2nd gen filter if anyone is interested, the rubber boot I mentioned in the ad was purchased from www.airflowonline.com for about 15 bucks.
