Mold Material

I'm getting ready to build the ram air box for my hood, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make a mold of the underhood area so that I can get the exact measurements. I've thought about using something like memory foam or taking the expanding foam and using a trashbag as it's container.



The Ram box I'm wanting to make will sit over the engine and the hood will close down on it, with a rubber gasket fit.

you could do a fiberglass mold... plastic off the area, make a glass mold to cover all the plastic. when hard, make another mold off the first negitive mold to have a mirror mold of the original space... doesn't need to look pretty, nice place to practice fiberglass molding [i think i will do something like this when i get my 04 and i make my own air box to house a bhaf type element]

The only problem I see with trying to do a fiberglass molding is that what I'm more interested in, is the clearances between the truck and the hood when the hood is shut. There is no real way to do a fiberglass molding with the hood shut, which is why I was thinking about the expanding foam.

How about the green foam they use in flower arrangements? It seems to crush rether easily and manitain its shape once crushed.

Clay?

The foam would be OK, except it would stick to the hood and engine, destroy itself in the removal process. Mold some clay to the dimensions you want your box to be and set it in place. Close your hood on it, and reopen, your tight spots or areas of contact will be dented to what you want. You might have to make several takes.

I'll consider the clay idea, would just require a ton of it I would think. On the expanding foam idea, what I was thinking of doing was putting it in a big plastic trashbag, so that it expanded inside of it and would not come in contact with the truck. I did get the inserts cut out this weekend, now I just have to finish figuring out how I'm going to mount them for sure. Also, whether I should paint them black or leave them natural. I'm also thinking of getting some black door edge molding to go around them to cover up the edges. here are some pics of before and after.

Expanding foam would be my choice also.

Just be damn sure the plastic doesn't leak.

some industrial strenght plastic bags that get used by lanscaping folks should be strong enough. if the pointy twigs don't rip the bags open, i don't think some foam will. .
