Has anyone removed there side molding and the piece on the tailgate? Is the any holes or clips that hold the molding onto the tailgate? Likes or dislikes to doing this?

My son took the tailgate moulding off of his 99 he just pulled it off. Nothing holding it on but tape. I think the side molding is the same way. Some use a heat gun or hair dryer or you can put fishing line under it too and cut the tape. The ones I have seen with it off look good. The side molding might prevent some idiot from banging your doors.

Thanks lschultz i was thinking about that also, but i am going to brave it and remove it all to see if ilike it or not.

I removed all of mine and the molding and stickers off tailgate. Looks ALOT better, but took FOREVER to get all the tape and glue off. Good Luck

I've been thinking of removing my side moldings too. Does anyone have pictures after removal? Before and after would be great but if not, after pics would be ok too.

I removed all of the molding and badges on my truck and it looks awesome. I used a gasket scraper due to the fact that i was repainting it anyway. If i could fiure out how to post pics i would.

For the tape removeal, try WD-40 to soak it off. I've had good luck with it.

If you end up wanting the molding back on, you can always re-attach with 3M double-side tape for emblems. :)

I pulled all mine off... . Heated it up with a heat gun and ripped it off there. Then the tape was stuck on there for a few weeks cause im lazy. :-laf With some goo gone it took nearly 3 hours to just do one side of the bed. Looked good... Then Got an erraser wheel... . that attaches on to a drill and takes the tape off with out screwing up the paint. What a mess... Only did one door like that cause it was such a mess. Then used the heat gun to warm up the tape to the point where it was almost too hot to touch... then with my thumb just rolled it right off the truck... Easy as pie... Little touching up with some Goo Gone for the little bit of sticky stuff still on there and i was done. 100 times better the the old flaking stock fake chrome stuff. Going to take the plastic off the tail gate this week some time.

i just did my entire truck and it looks much better. but i promise your thumbs will not forgive you for this one.

just rip the molding off dont heat it you want as much 3m adhesive left on there as possible. the heat the strips of gray adhesive until hot to the touch dont overheat b/c this will cause the paint to bubble. after heating a samll strip of say 2 feet then get a wide tipped screw driver with a red shop towel fold it over 4 to 5 time over the tip and begin to roll the tape off. push against the bottem of the tape not the paint of the truck put your fingers at the tip of the screw driver to help keep from driving the tip into the paint push and pull up at the same time almost in a rolling fashion. dont stop keep your momentum going. once you get the bulk off then you will have the edge residue to deal with... i found that as said before soak with wd-40 then take your rag covered screw driver and use the point to scratch the stubborn black line off. point of the screw driver up and down and take the tip in a side to side fashion (this take precision) more or less scratching the black line off. then spray down again with wd take you red shop rag and scub as hard as you can and then you will be finished with 2 feet... ... sorry but it is easier to put in injectors and change a turbo than it is to debage a dodge perfectly... . warning you will put some little scratches and some paint might flake but it is not big deal... and for dullies your fiber glass will be stained all i did was tape off and repaint. on more tip take you tailgate off clean it up and work on it inside as you drink some beer... at least that what i did but your wifes friends will think you are crazy :). all in all if is ONE MAJOR PAIN IN THE ARSE but its worth it. take your time and do a side at a time. my 97 is the worst year to debage trust me!!! sorry for the long post but i tried go be gone using my thumb all of that stuff and the way i described work best for me

Yep Our 97's have the stip all the way down the side front fenders to rear bumper... . what a pain... Ill have to try your screwdriver shop rag thing a try on my tail gate. Thanks for the tip my thumbs are thanking you already... .

You guys that are taking off the heavy black side moldings... . what are you doing with the pieces??

I would like to finish the sides of my truck ( like Dodge should have done  )

Have the 01' and the moldings only go up to the rear of the cab... . looks like crap

JUST A FYI, i took mine off and pulled the clear coat off and had to repaint the tailgate. just go slow and use a heat gun not a hair dryer.

Sorry mine were ruined pulling them off or i would give them to you. They were bent in to U shapes from pulling on them plus my 97's are diferent then yours... . Oo.

Buff: Go to dodgeparts.com OEM parts lookup and select your vehicle as a 99 3500 pickup. I learned here that 1999 was the last year they put the dually bed pieces on. Order the pieces from them. I think $12 a piece, but I don't remember. They come with sticky tape already on them ready to go.

My gallery has some after pictures. After I pulled mine, I heard that body shops have some special adhesive remover that makes it easy to get the glue off, It took me four hours to get all the adhesive off. It was worth it though. I left the tailgate piece on. I get lots of rock chips on it pulling the goosenecks on gravel roads.

I have seen a couple of trucks running around without the molding on them and they do look ALOT nicer. I think it's all coming off. Oo.

We'll yesterday morning i got out the hair dryer and peeled the stickers off of my tailgate and pulled all of the side molding off and the black piece on the tailgate. When i pulled the molding off of the drivers door it was already starting to rust behind it and it was full of dirt and gravel. When i get new emblems for the doors is there anyway to remove the black paint off of them, so they look like chrome without damaging them? I thought i heard at one time somebody used acetone and that took the paint off and didn't hurt the emblem.

Not all that long ago I repainted my truck and removed all the side moldings and nameplates. They come off pretty intact with a good heat gun and soma patients. After the new paint I decided to leave the old 2nd gen side moldings and nameplates off, and in their place I installed '04 nameplates but mounted them in the vacant area where the side moldings were. The result was a much cleaner looking truck, that looked different, exactly what I wanted. The old nameplates are not worth reinstalling, they look old and the black lettering makes them a bear to keep clean. The new style nameplates are completely chrome, which is easy to see and easier to take care of. I went to Telafly Dodge for all my new nameplates, they are great to deal with and have competitive pricing.
