My dear mother lives about 5 hours north of me all by her lonesome. I've always worried about her and now I'm really worried!

She just called and told me her 94 year old female neighbor had been beaten to death in her home and robbed. How in the F can someone cause harm to such a frail lady?

I'm completely setback in my trust for mankind.

The world is a cruel place, Mr, Hawes. Sorry to hear about that. Do they know who is responsible yet?

First of all, I am truly sorry to hear that news. I'm sure your mom is really upset at this point.

Unfortunately, the elderly are an easy target and attract the slime that would do something like that.

I don't know the right words either. Mom's are pretty special people.

My sympathy to the family that lost a Mother and a loved one.

We all need to respect each other and do the right thing. I just finished watching a short news clip about a waiter that stood up against insults against a young man with Downs Syndrome, it wasn't a life threating issue, but he stood up against the insults of a narrow minded rude person. It all counts to the good.

JHawes,
My Heart goes out to you and your Mom!
There are wolves among the Lambs!
May the LORD Comfort Both of you and give you wisdom in a course of action!

Jason,

Would it be possible to move your mother near you? Living with fear is going to make her remaining years tougher. Best wishes for a solution.

There needs to be a Gitmo-type prison for depraved individuals of the world who are convicted of these especially heinous crimes. I'm talking way beyond Pelican Bay. More like the Spanish Inquisition.
Definitely move your mom closer.

Sorry to hear about that it has to be very upsetting to your mom. I will never figure out why people have to hurt the older people for any reason. It's just plain STUPID. Sorry that your mom is going to probably live in fear now.

Pretty weird. Dottie was a rare, 94 old lady who could still properly drive herself around. Even for long 2/4 hour drives. One of the lucky ones who surely would have lived long enough to reach the century mark.

Now, my mom is the last of the original blue hairs that lived on her road; she's outlived them all! I wish she'd move closer to us but she's firm at staying put.

I have another house on my property that I completely rebuilt for my MIL. Granite tops, hardwood floors, new HVAC system, Oak cabinets etc... ... Sadly, she passed before it was finished. Tried to get my mom to move in for free but she wanted NOTHING to do with it. It broke my heart but I know I couldn't make that old horse drink the water.....

Forgive me for not knowing, but are there reasons for her to come closer, such as grand kids etc? Maybe you could convince her to come n visit, stay in the extra house you set up. Maybe she'll never look back once she's there. Getting her there is the hard part it sounds.

That's all you can do. You provided an alternative and offered it to her. You can't force her to make that decision.

We all understand why the old folks are determined to stay in their own homes, neighborhoods, near familiar places and friends, etc. I'm determined to stay where I am also and if I am fortunate enough to keep on ticking, I can see my future of becoming old (really old) over the horizon.

That ole bird wouldn't budge. She lives in town and were country bumpkin. We have one house across the highway from us but the trees hide them. Besides that, we don't have neighbors for another 1/2 mile or so. For whatever reason, the idea of rural life made her nervous at here age. We even have a in at our local hospital. My BIL is a head ER physician so we never wait in line and rarely see our own MD's because he prescribes us our meds when necessary.

What saddens me the most is my girls. They don't get to see her very much and us, as a whole family, seldom get to visit her because of our business and other obligations.

My aunt, who is in her mid 80's now, has been living here with us for over 10 years. She moved in after my other aunt, who she was living with, passed. When we first started this arrangement, it took a little getting used to for all of us. But in a short time, it has become a great situation. She and my daughter have become extremely close, my wife does all the cooking, etc. for her, and she has us for company.

My parents now live in a house a little over 500' from us on the other side of our property. It's slowing becoming an ongoing episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" around here, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

Hopefully someday your mother will change her mind. I think that once she would get there near you, she would be very happy with the situation.

world is a terrible place now... her in las vegas, in a town a few miles away called boulder city... a metro cop shot his wife, 5yr old child, burnt his house and finished himself off... . really, to kill your own child... . that man was in a deep place... .

I'm always saddened by such news. I hope the authorities find the degenerates that did this, and quickly. Mankind has repeatedly failed to live up to our own lofty ideals. Heads up and eyes out. You never know when it's your turn to face the selfish and simple minded degenerates that roam freely.

I'm in a similar position. My mother lives alone, and a little over 600 miles away. Her neighborhood has continually declined over the decades, but she's still not interested in moving. Yet. Stay safe.

Today, they arrested the 20 year old neighbor who lived next to this woman. The local paper published pics of this kid and statements from him. He said things like "she was a nice lady" and "she always said it was an ice day".
On the day of investigation, the paper asked him what happed and he stated that she was murdered yesterday. In return, the paper asked how he knew that and claimed it came from across the road from the neighbors. These neighbors are my MOM so even I know that's not true because she doesn't speak to said suspect.

Apparently, they found evidence in his home linking him to the the murder but haven't released that yet.

I'm baffled that the next door neighbor could have murdered Dodie.

The sorry pos probably needed a few dollars to walk down to the convenience store and buy a 44 oz drink and some junk food. He'll learn about real life when he gets his room assignment in a KA prison with a life sentence.
