Replacement under warranty/courtesy
Well, as I bought the Mopar hands-free cell-phone unit at the same time I bought the truck, it was included in the 3/36 warranty; however, the truck had between 35,900 and 36,001 miles on it when the cell-phone plug broke, although it had 36,700 on the odometer when I finally took the cell-phone unit to Moss Motors Dodge in Riverside, CA. Moss Motors -- 951-688-6200-- suggested I call the Dodge 800-customer-service telephone number and see what they would do, if anything. I called and spent only about 15 minutes on the phone. The rep looked up my VIN, asked a few questions, and called Moss Mtrs to check on my service record with them, as I had purchased the truck at Chaprell Dodge in Ada, Oklahoma (another good dealership, in my opinion). After waiting on hold for about 5 or 6 minutes, the Dodge customer service guy came back on the line and said for me to call Moss Motors and "they would handle it. " I called the service rep at Moss and he told me Dodge had agreed to replace the unit at no charge; he asked me to come and so he could document the mileage on the truck, which I did. I'm not sure why the Dodge customer service rep didn't tell me that himself, but... God works in strange ways His wonders to perform... Today (about 10 days later) they called me and said the unit had arrived. I went and picked it up, and strange-o-de-strange, it was the correct one! I had to give them my old unit in exchange, so there'll be no chance of repairing that one!
I'm still convinced that since there is only ONE part # for this item -- 82207772 -- and since you have to supply the make and model of the cell phone you're going to use when you order the "hands-free-cell-phone-kit" -- that there is ONE part and ONLY ONE part that plugs into the cig lighter, and MANY different electric cords that plug into various cell phones. Now, SOMEWHERE along the line of production and delivery there is SOMEONE who knows how to order a replacement cord, without ordering a whole new unit. The back of the cig-lighter/speaker unit comes apart easily with the removal of four screws, and the cord is soldered into into the electrical contacts. SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE makes these things, and has electrical cords and plugs for 50 to 500 different cell phone models. WHO?!
Nonetheless, kudos to Moss Motors Dodge of Riverside -- 951-688-6200 -- and to Dodge Customer Service/Relations. Let's hope it goes as well when I need to replace the engine!
