David and Goliath

So whats the deal with Mopars taking the death shots in movies and TV. I have always wondered this. First of all there is the Dukes of Hazard. I shudder everytime I think of the 300 some odd chargers they killed. Next in Line... Bullet That was a Nice and probably an original Hemi Charger that the mustang couldn't catch, oh yeah they BLEW IT UP in the end. And the Vanishing point Remake by Fox, there goes one 1970 Challenger, and one 1970 Charger. Gone Fishin, a blue 1968 Fastback Barracuda(Just like mine) gets drowned. And in the Fast and the Hilarious they killed a Charger(hey at least it was the fastest car in the movie). What set me off was a Video by POD(??). It starts off with some dude cruising in a 64 or 65 Dart, Has his Mopar shirt on and evertyhing... then he gets T-boned by a Tour Bus!! It set me off lol I had to vent :)

I am sure I left out plenty of Movies. And I didn't mention the Original Vanishing point because the Car burning in the end is an early CAMARO HAHA Whoever made that decision was thinking straight IMHO. I had always heard that but actualy saw it myself the other day when it was on TV. Anyways... I feel better now

Ever see Joe Dirt?

There are a few Mopars in that flick... when the main character mentions his Hemi, the trailer bettys swoon!

The Charger in Bullitt was a 440 car (no less of a loss, though).

Go here for interesting info on it and the Mustang: http://www.people.freenet.de/pony/index2.htm

I agree, though. It's painful to watch those nice cars go down. In The Longest Yard, Burt Reynolds side swipes a '67 GTX with his Masseratti at the beginning of the movie. The Dukes of Hazzard was an abomination to the Dodge Charger. I can't stand seeing those replica circus wagons at shows. If those guys want to replicate a Charger, they should go with a basic black '68 - ala Bullitt. There's nothing like hubcaps on a Hemi or 440 car. The ultimate sleeper look.

In the movie Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry they toasted a '69 Charger at the end, too. You gotta love the old car movies, though. I just watched Two Lane Blacktop again. The stars of the movie are a '55 Chevy and a '70 GTO, but there's some fine Mopars in the race scenes. At the beginning, there's even a Charger Daytona racing a '69 Coronet or Super Bee in a street race. Then the '55 Chev goes up against a '70 Hemi 'Cuda. Of course the '55 beats him (running a dual quad tunnel rammed 454 with slicks). The 'Cuda was an automatic with street tires. But I digress.

Here's some good stuff on the original Vanishing Point movie. They used 4 Challengers in it - all with 440, 4-speeds. A 5th car wasn't used. It was a 383 automatic car. As you said, they toasted a Camaro at the end instead of the more valuable Challenger. Nice stunt stand-in! http://www.geocities.com/1970ufo/vpoint.html

Two lane black top was an Interesting movie lol. The ending was just... . well it just stoped. . wierd IMO good car footage though. And James taylor made the right carreer decision ;)

Yeah, these old flicks are all I have left after I foolishly sold my '70 GTX in '84. :( It's funny the little details you notice and remember in these movies when you're into the Mopar scene big time.

Maybe some day I'll get back in the game. I sure have the itch! But I don't have the pesos. :(

in the movie "DIE HARD with a vengence" they kill a ram pickup. . it was a gasser though... so it was not REAL bad. . but still..... Jim

TWISTER

sacrificed a new 2nd gen gasser to a house, telephone pole. tree limbs, tricycle, coen field, 2 tornados, and alot more stuff.

That truck was good at fixing itself to lol. It seemed like sometimes the windshield was cracked. . sometimes it wasn't. There was some other really obvious things they missed when changing trucks. Oh well. . its just a gasser ;)

How about "Tommy Boy" where they don't really trash, but beat up a real nice '67 GTX ragtop? I just scored "Bullitt" on DVD real cheap.

I can understand the frustration of seeing the best of the best get wrecked. But in cases where the car was in production (like in "Bullitt") the car was easily replaceable. It's where cars have to be hunted down for a movie and wrecked (like the Dukes and Vanishing point remake, and modern movies) that get me pi$$ed.

Ohh Man... I forgot about Tommy Boy. You can see where they change cars in that movie though, thank god. At least they only thrashed one GTX convertable instead of two.

Fireman Dave,

Did you know that the `55 used in Two Lane Blacktop was the same one used in American Graffiti? Just some useless info... not that I pay attention to GM's or anything... eh-hm...

Has anyone seen Two Lane on DVD? OHHH- That reminds me... . Gone In 60 Seconds. The original. Tons of cool `69-`70 Belvidere and Coronet Calf. Highway Patrols ... 383's... 440's... URGH... URGH... URGH!:D :D

Yes, J, I read that about that '55. Some guy has it all restored in American Graffiti trim. In the Two Lane Blacktop movie they said it was a 454, but it actually had a 427 in it. I think I saw it for sale on DVD on some websites. Let me know if you want to know where.

Speaking of Gone in 60 Seconds - it's going to be on Speedvision on Lost Drive-in this Sat. night. I remember seeing that movie in the theater in 1974. Until recently, I had never met another person who had even heard of it, much less seen it. Ah, yes. They just don't make quality movies like that anymore. The Hollywood Knights was another good car movie. Not much Mopar, but some very nice cars. And funny, too.

And if you want to get into TV..... Beverly Hillbillies, Mannix, Mod Squad - all had nice Mopars in them.

The car in Hollywood Knights(57? i really don't pay much attention to non mopars lol) is Car Crafts project X car. The yellow 55-7 that they always or at least used to rebuild all the time. I haven't picked up an issue of Camaro Craft lately so I don't know if they still mess with it.

Ram pickup trashed

In the new movie Rat Race, a girl throws stuff from a helicopter at a intence blue gasser Reg cab. then chases it with the helicoper and then the truck hits a pole and keeps going til the end when the radiator runs out of water. At least it got to the destination they wanted... ...

When the original movie came out, my dad and I met the guy that played the thief and saw the Mustang as they were bringing it in for exhibit at Alemeda mall in Houston TX. Did not even know the movie existed till then.

Gone in 60 Seconds

I watched it tonight and picked up some interesting info. The theif was the writer, director, stunt driver, producer of the movie. He went on to make 2 more similar flicks. While filming a Gone in 60 Seconds sequel in 1989, he was killed in a stunt. The original Mach 1 is still preserved in it's demolished condition and still drives!
