I thought I had seen enuff of incompetance at the DMV last year when some guy in Turlock was the legal owner of my truck (he didn't know it) and it took a lot of crazy business to fix that.
Well this year's episode was not quite the bad. The law has changed on the weight limit about handicapped plates. If a CA vehicle has a handicapped license plate the weight fees are not charged. That amounts to $204 for us. The previous law said that the truck had to weigh less the 6001 lbs to qualify. Our truck has an official weight of 6230 lbs so it didn't qualify. We found out that the law has changed so the weight limit has been raised to 8001 so we applied and got the plates approved. However, the DMV clerk still insisted that the increase in the weight limit only applied to the plates. We still had to pay the weight fee. I looked up the law on line and found out that the clerk is full of it!!!!
(Where do they get these people??
) My wife spent over 40 minutes on the phone today. After about 30 minutes she FINALLY got to speak to a human. At least we think it was a human. With the DMV you never know. They are going to send us a check for the $204. Complicating this whole mess is that there is a hold on our truck records because the mess last year is not completely resolved. I'll bet they pay a lot for fire insurance at the DMV offices!
Anyway, if your rig is eligible for a handicapped plate in CA you DON'T have to pay the weight fee!!!
