So what is more annoying than high fuel prices? Having the pump cut off at $65. 00 and then having to pull out my credit card and start a whole new transaction. You would think the fuel stations would remove the automatic cut-off with the higher prices  ! Ok, I'm through venting.

I had mine cut off (I think at $75) a couple weeks ago. I wasn't sure why, but it was pretty full so I took off. I never realized they had a limit.

My understanding is that it is the credit card company that sets the limit, not the station.

I've heard this too. When you're pushing $100+ for a fillup, you'd think the stations would contact the card companies and push for higher limits. The stations probably have to pay for each transaction. The local truck stop limit is $50 on the non bigrig pumps.

This has happened at two different stations, one cut off at $58. 00 and this last one cut off at $65. 00. I prefer the high speed pumps but they conveniently disappear around the time that I need fuel.

$50. 00 down here in South Florida. I asked the gas station manager -- he said it was the station, not the Credit Card company... .

It is typically $75 here. One year ago, most around here were $50, but today most are $75. That is still not enough to fill my 42 gallon tank in my Burban so I usually just pay inside now. If I'm at any truckstop, it will fill the whole thing with no problem. Examples are Flying J, Love's, and Gas America Truck stops.

I just filled up Saturday night for $92. Wow, but I only have to fill up about every 2nd or 3rd week.

Happened to me yesterday, $80... 30gal. Girl inside didn't know why it shut off. I was po'ed having to walk around in the rain to find out why. just left. Wanted 50gals. to get home on. Made it anyway.

I guess from now on I'll pay inside, they don't run the card til your done.

They may be limiting their exposure to drive off crime. Seems to be a lot of that occurring with the higher prices. Of course you probably would not use a credit card then drive off without paying, but if you watch Cops enough, you do not have to be smart to be a crook :-laf

Mine always shut off at $75. The other thing that irks me is they raised the gas prices, but not the limits on the cards! I was out west when my Shell card quit working. I called the number and they told me they would not raise the limit, but would let me have one final fill-up.

I never understood this practice. It cuts you off at a predetermined amount, but then lets you swipe the card again. It kind of reminds me of a sign i saw on the counter of a gas station that said "no checks over $50. 00,but you could write two checks if you had to.

Klenger: If it was the credit card companies, I would certainly like to know why one station has a $75 limit and another station(usung the same credit card) is $48???? I truely believe it is the station that is the limitation and NOT the credit card companies. The stations that get me wound up are the ones who want to know how much I am going to put in the tank when I tell them I am filling up.

I believe the issue is the difference in fees charged by the credit card company on a signed CC slip vs. an unsigned pay-at-the-pump CC transaction. A signed transaction is around 2% where an unsigned transaction (at the pump) is 3%-4%. This figure is even higher for some cards (e. g. , american express)

By limiting the pay at the pump quantity, the vendor with get more people to come into the store to pay for their fuel, thereby saving them alot of money. Just think, for every $100 of credit card transactions the station HAS TO PAY the credit card company $2 ($3-$4 for pump transactions).

This is what credit card companys do to protect themselves from fraudulent use of credit cards. Think about the amount of money they loose when someone uses a stolen credit card and they have to write off the charges.

It is pretty rare (and stupid) that someone will use a stolen credit card for face-to-face purchases. Pay-at-the-pump and internet sales are the perfect places for these jerks to spend our money.
