2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission more brake problems

I have a problem with the brakes on my 96 3500. Sometimes the brake light on the dash and the abs light will come on and sometimes they won't. When they are not on and I am idling around base at about 15mph and try and come to a complete stop, it feels like the abs is kicking on and the brakes start to pulse and the truck continues forward until they grab hard and the truck stops instantly. When the brake and abs light is on, it never does this regardless of how slow I am going. I don't notice the problem after a prolonged drive at 60 - 65 mph, just after a slow putz around base. I'm wondering is changing all the vacuum lines will help?

Well... ... what condition are your rear and front brakes in?

Have you checked the ABS sensor on the rear axle?



I have a 96 3500 and the ABS light has never come on - once. But then it is functioning correctly. If your ABS light on the dash is illuminating - trouble shoot the problem and find the cause.



Or you could just start replacing parts and eventually you'll fix the problem. Why would you want to start by replacing vacuum lines?



Check your rear brakes, if you have not had the drums off recently, check to make sure that you do not have a bad axle sela that is allowing oil to contaminate the brake shoes. If everything checks out okay, verify the ABS sensor is okay and then also properly adjust the rear brake shoes with the star adjuster.



Bleed the brake fluid to flush any old or contaminated fluid from the cylinders and reservoir.
