Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel problem (maybe)

OK guys I finally got my truck (Project burned out engine compartment ) where I can drive it now after getting the correct year ECM, its a 2k dodge dually auto truck, I still have a few problems though. The first is the trucks starter will just clicks, like the relay is not working right, it will also do this in any gear, like a ground is not working some where, I take the starter relay off (new relay) and put on a jumper wire bypassing the relay and truck starts up with no click, whats wrong here? then after truck starts up code 1899 appears (pnp switch failure code) up on my OTC, I replaced the pnp switch on the transmission and it does the same thing! ok here is problem # 2 , the truck seems like its taking off in 2nd gear, the ECM I got came out of a late 99 year std shift truck, so does my computers need reflashed? is there a better flash program to have the dealer use? what does the dealer usually charge to do this? I want to thank you guys again for the ones who help me by replying to my previous problem ads too! Thanks Guys! at least its drivable! I hope you guys can help me again.

PCM

The problems you're having now are not ECM related!

The clicking starter sounds like the contacts in the starter are burned up.

A member here ( I think it's Larry B ) makes better contacts than the OEM.

The transmission... I dunno, anyway the transmission is NOT controlled by the ECM but by the PCM. The fact that the ECM you have now is for a stick does not relate to the second gear starts. The only problem you could get with the ECM for the stick is that idle speed is a little lower for the stick. That COULD cause the engine to stall when the transmission is placed into gear.

since you put in a new pnp switch, check for loose wires or bare wires coming from that switch. Also one of the wires, I believe is supposed to have either 5 or 12 volts to it. I can't remember(sorry). I tried a 2000 pcm from a standard on mine and it wouldn't shift. It stayed in limp mode. I don't know if you can get it reflashed or not. I went with a 2001 pcm auto and my truck worked perfect. Call to see if the dealer can reflash a 5 speed pcm into an auto, it is worth a shot. I don't think they can. I think you will have to have a auto pcm. Does the truck shift at all right now? It should be in limp mode. The pcm controls all the shift points working in conjuction with the ecm. It shouldn't be shifting at all.

I have the original auto pcm which is still on the truck, it shifts through the gears great but seems like its taking off in second, also the starter works great as long as the jumper wire is connected where the relay sits, no clicks at all with the wire, something is not relaying the 2 together with the relay installed, I it will also start up in any gear so there must be a ground problem somewhere? thanks Joey

the only thing I can tell you on the pcm is to count and make sure it is going through all 3 gears and overdrive. If it is starting out in second, one thing to check is the speed sensor at the rear of the transmission. It might be bad or it might need cleaned. It is just a magnet that can sometimes get metallic pieces stuck on it and send a false signal. On the starter, it obviously works so make sure you have power to the relay. There is I think 3 wires going to it(not sure). one is the brown going to the starter, another is like red (hot all the time) and one from the key switch. There might be a pnp wire in there but i don't think so. Make sure there is 12 volts to the red wire, it is like 12 guage wire. It also is #30 on the relay. That is hot at all times. Right now it sounds like you are starting it right from the key switch wire. If there is power to the red wire or #30 on relay side, check the pnp switch. It would almost have to be in that. It might not be fitting exactly right. If you do not have power to the red wire, check the fuse because i do believe it is fused. I am sorry i can't help you more, I am in IRAQ right now and I don't have my truck to look at.
