Just saw this posted on Popluar Mechanics website. More rumors about next diesel engines in Dodge. Also shows photo of 2002 model covered up.
Date 9/18/00
"2003 Mercedes-Benz Dodge Ram - Dodge sells about one in five Ram pickup trucks with diesel engines, specifically a Cummins 5. 9-liter turbocharged six cylinder. But that will change when the 2003 model Ram pickup is introduced in 2002. Then Dodge Rams will use a six-cylinder turbocharged diesel built by Mercedes-Benz in Germany. The Mercedes engine is expected to be as large as 6. 4 liters and will develop 200-plus horsepower. This will be a substantial cost saver for DaimlerChrysler. "

Sometimes I hate learning things early on the Internet! (sometimes)

Keep in mind, Popular Mechanics also had us in flying cars by Y2K.

IOW, they are wrong as much as they are right. With the number orf rumors on what engine will be in these trucks when flying around, I am taking a wait and see stance. Hell, but then, the ISB might have a new design feature and it'll no longer be the "B".

I have said it before and I will say it again; I was informed by a source at DC in the diesel lab, to wait for the 2003 as there will be a FOUR DOOR with a CUMMINS and an ALLISON auto, for those of us too lazy to shift.

You can take it for what its worth, but I believe him 100%, because that is what he does all day every day.

I am waiting un-patiently for the 4 door, even though SHE says I cannot get a new truck for AT LEAST 10 years.

Was thinking of getting mine customized (stretched) to a crew cab. Cheaper than buying another one, w/o the 2 year wait.

Dealer told me last week the diesel 4x4 will be the last model to get the crew. Seems to be it should be the 1st! But what do I know, I'm just a paying customer.

Here is a new one for you. I was down at the local dealer the other day shopping for a new truck with a friend of mine. The salesman saw my Diesel and we got to chatting. He says that Dodge is going to start putting a diesel in the Dakota (I think they already do in South America), he also said that there was a new "big" SUV coming out soon and that it would have a diesel in it. Of course this was a salesman, so take it all with a grain of salt.

I have recently read I think on Frttz's Ram Page but not sure where Ford F150 will soon have a shortened PS V6 diesel. Maybe lots of changes coming in the world of Diesel Trucks but you cant beat a Cummins

JR2, both of the items mentioned by the salesman were addressed in past issues of the TDR (although, the V-6 Detroit Delta engine was in a Durango not a Dakota). The full size SUV is to be built off the Ram platform... in Mexico. This vehicle would NOT be for sale in the US. I believe they are using the old Ramcharger name for this vehicle.

I live in the Detroit area. I swear I saw a full size SUV with a 2000 Sport Ram front end. It said RamCharger on it. It was just a 2 door though. It could've been a Chrysler Tech guy driving it around, I'm not sure.

I have personally seen the new body style Ramcharger in Texas as well as in Mexico. It looks like... well... Just what you would expect. Same size as the old ones, two doors and all. I heard the back hatch is the same as on the Dodge minivans.

The Ramcharger does exist in Mexico, and you probobly did see one in Michigan, as my Mother saw one in Lake Orion, on Baldwin road. I believe she said it was red. My friend said it was a JTE truck (Jeep/Truck Engineering). I was told the Ramcharger does not meet the federal standards so it is not sold in the U. S. I do not know what engine is in the truck though. I read somewhere that there was supposed to be a suburban /excursion style Dodge named the Adventurer, but it was cancelled. I do not know for sure on that one. The four door next gen. ran if for real as another friend is doing slam testing on the cab doors now. The second set of doors however ar more like 3/4 doors not full sized doors.

As I recall the TDR stated that a Ramcharger was being built in Mexico soon after the new body style came out(1-4 years). They were either not able to pass emission test for USA or Dodge didn't there was a market here.
They were also making med duty trucks down there but those were definitely not able to pass emission standards here.
What ever the rumors about engines, Dodge would be ignoramuses(ignorant morons or is that ignorant + duffas or ignorant, moron and duffas ) to give up on Cummins.
