I finally got around to updating my website - at least for the exhaust section - and converted the large files to MP3 and added a couple more clips.

The clips include all of my different arrangements I have been through,

1) 4" Dynomax "Cat Back" where I cut the pipe just after the factory down pipe and added the system

2) 4" Straight Pipe - Same set up as above but removed the muffler with a section of straight pipe

3) 5" Straight Pipe - I replaced the factory down pipe with a 4" into 5" pipe and out the rear

4) Same set up as 3) but added a 9" x 18" Nelson Resonator

5) Same as setup 4) but added a 9" x 26" Walker Muffler.

The muffler has a baffle in it and I was little concerned at first but thought I would try it. I haven't noticed any increase in temperature and it actually seems more peppy. One thing I noticed is that in between gears, it maintains some boost pressure as opposed to dropping to 0 like it did when I was straight piped.

The other page contains sound levels and frequency so I could see any changes between the set ups rather than going by what I think I hear.

Heh heh, you must be getting quite a bit of traffic. I can't view your site because it "has temporarily exceeded its data transfer limit. Please try again later. " :( Pretty opportune time to update it in view of Katmandu's earlier thread on 4" vs. 5" exhuast. :)

Here is the data

Information Concerning the 5" Exhaust

All measurements are done at 10 ft. and taken with a Heath Spectrum Analyzer

5" Straight Pipe

Idle 94 decibels (db) peaks

94 db @ 180 hz

88 db @ 45 hz

Frequency response range - 31. 5 hz - 2. 8 khz

5" Straight Pipe with 9" x 18"Nelson Resonator

Idle 91 decibels (db) peak

88 db @ 45 hz

85 db @ 63 hz

91 db @ 125 hz

Frequency response range - 31. 5 hz - 180 hz

5" Flex Pipe, 9" x 18"Nelson Resonator moved towards

the cab, 5" turn down.

that sounds more like a diesel!!!!!

That is what a diesel should sound like!! That ISN'T what mine sounds like!!! I am I jealous. Lucky Guy. :D

did you see any differences from the 4" catback to the 5" I have a 3" straight now and am considering doing the dynomax cat back for now, untill I do a ss dual. its just too loud now for where, but I tow and would like the power and egt down, but it must still be better than 3" straight

I moved up to 5" purely for sound. The absolute loudest was 4" straight with a 5" tip. When you got on it had a sharp raspy sound. The 5" is more mellow and deep. When you put your new system on I highly recommend getting a 4" down pipe as well. It seemed like the throttle response was better, certainly the boost came up quicker. With the dynomax muffler, I didn't have any drone but I did get the drone once the muffler was removed.

Hope this helps,

Bob

perfectly thanks. I was gonna do the turbo back, but im trying to be cheap right now. lol. but I can get one cheap enough so maybe I will. by the way, did you have to move the spair for the 5"

well you soley pushed me over the top, lol. It was bound to happen though. and I bought a mbrp 4" turbo back. I needed a post like that to motivate me. lol so um thanks i guess.

I'm looking at some of the systems on ebay. I'd like something that's just a straight pipe so I can put an Aeroturbine just behind the downpipe. I had a setup like that on my '04 and it had NO in-cab drone and sounded really sweet.

wow that is pretty cheap. and mostly untrue. most delers that have decent prices deal directly with the manufacturer. meaning there is no middleman to begin with. I sold aftermarket parts for a long time and am very fimiliar with the pricing structure and retail margins. I wish yo could make 150% on an exhaust, even buying direct. they do what a lot of other places do I would imagine. custom make an exhaust and have a muffler shop or an exhaust maker make them a set quantity. then they can sell it for cheap. beware of companys like that is the fit and quality sometimes lacks. I bought a mbrp aluminized turbo back 4" for 295$ last night. and could have got an off brand cheaper but I wont.

Sometimes Im very jealous of you guys with the older motors... These CR motors are great and all, but just dont sound like a diesel should :(

I think I know what you mean. My '04 was REALLY nice-----very refined and electric motor smooth but I hated that electronic throttle pedal and how it all made the motor seem like driving an appliance. Sometimes it seemed like you could catch the pedal by surprise and it would kind of stutter for a second. The 12v's have a very alive and connected feel to them. Lots of real diesel soul, not to mention how much better they sound. Reminds me of the diesels I grew up around. ;)

AMEN!!! Now, can anyone tell me how to keep my accelerator pedal from rattling . . . :-laf :-laf

Keep constant heavy pressure on it! :D

Ahh, that's what's so wierd--mine is just the opposite of the normal rattle problem with no pressure. It rattles only when I'm holding pressure on the pedal, drives me nuts! :( I guess this is somewhat off topic.

RBallard:

Jost got my '94 straight piped 4". Awesome sound. Wondering whether I should have it come out at the rear with a 5" tip. Right now it empties underneath, pointing out to the passenger side... can't really see it unless you look. Do you think it would sound louder/better coming out the rear on an angle with a tip?

Like the sound clips... do you have any launch or drive-by ones?
