Ok, so I just did my second service to my '06 3500 MegaCab and I had a concern about the amount of grease the front driveshaft CV took. The first service @ 3K miles took only 2 pumps before I saw it coming out of the CV. This second service took about 7-8 pumps before the grease had come out. Has anyone else put this much grease into there driveshaft when it comes time for the service? I didn't loose any grease, like from it splattering all over when driving, so where did it all go? Any help on this is appreciated. :D

Thanks, Joe

It most likely got flung out... those ball/socket alignment doflinkies don't really seal like a ujoint or balljoint do...

I must be blind, but have not been able to find grease fitting on 8,000 mile new '06 3500 Mega. Could anyone provide clues ? perhaps a photo of the grease socket ?
thanks in advance

mine took 15 or more pumps to get the grease out the backside at 2500 miles. I should feel lucky to have a fitting(not a real fitting)but its such a P. I. T. A to get to.

dshatzer and CContreras:

I'd be willing to bet the fitting is there if there's a sticker under the hood.

RankRam posted a picture on a thread on 10/13/06 and several there described how they found theirs and listed some tips. I spent over a half hour looking for mine the first time. Do a search on front u-joint here and try John Holmes site at http://carsondodge.com/forums/.

Here's a pic of the blown shaft from my '04. 5. The grease fitting will be on the part that is all busted up in the pic. 04. 5 did not have the fitting, replacement does. It's not a zerk like you're probably used to seeing. It's more or less flush and requires a pin-point fitting, not a needlt fitting though.

Cattletrkr, sorry about your u-joint. Thanks for the photo and everyone's assistance. Found it (the dimple) and am filling it shortly. I attribute this to operator headspace error, I being the operator.
Otherwise the 2006 is light years ahead of the old stock'98 12V... . for now.

So if I understand this correctly, the 04. 5's don't have a greasable front drive shaft? I have looked and never have been able to find any fitting.

No, they didn't start until sometime in 05... my 04. 5 doesn't have one, and it's on the second shaft (a year old)...

Seems like the fitting was a good idea given the number of failed units. Too bad they didn't come up with a better style though.

It's not too bad after you have done it a time or two.

I'm not sure if it was included to prevent failures or the 3rd gen vibrations??? I had 75k on my original with no issues... the new one doesn't spin much now that I have selectable hubs...

Just make sure you don't try to use LSA instead of GA (automotive grease) :D

BTW, this should solve my dilemma also.
