Of course this has been beaten to death :-laf but i just finished doing a gauge install on my truck and all that is left is to hookup power for the pyro and transmission temp gauges as well as pull power for the gauge lighting. What color is the factory wire for the gauge lighting and where is the best place to tie into it?Secondly where is the best place to pull power to fire the pyro and transmission temp gauges?Should this only be hot with ignition? And lastly , should these be fused or is it already fused on the circuit im tying into. I considered installing a 6 place fuse block and tying into that seeing as how that would allow me to add mor crap later on without running a whole bunch more wires into engine compartment. Is it me or are these trucks hard to find a convenient place to pull power from inside the cab

I STRONGLY encourage you to get the Painless auxillary fuseblock. It allows you to run a complete electrical system separate from the stock with no worries. I know it takes time to install it, but it's worth it to do things "right". :)

Bartlett... I'm not sure if the wiring is in the same location for the '04. 5 as it is with the '04. I do know it;s a different color wire for the lights.

BUT just pull the headlight switch out. The plug has 2 rows of wiring... a top row and a bottom row. On the bottom row there should be 2 wires... the one that is closest to the middle is the dimmer.

Again I'm not sure if it's right or ont on the '04. 5 BUT I would think it is.

For power I just tapped into the cigarette lighter. I've done guages on 4 different trucks for myself and friends and put them all here.

I do agree that a fuseblock would be a better way to go though.

Yes that middle wire is the one for dimmer. I have the truck apart as we speak but keep getting interupted as im supposed to be working on company trucks :-laf

Bartlett I second the red cigarette lighter wire's use. Or you could use the hot wire from your trailer brake controller if you don't want to pull your whole dash off.

Aha, how about this:installing an auxilliary relay that is supplied constant hot from brake control supply and triggered by the cigar lighter and then have the hot out of relay going to my buss 6 circuit fuse block :--)

That simplifies things very well !! Oo. :-laf

Well the job is all done and i ended up with something similiar to the painless wiring setup. Iwired like described in previous post but pulled hot from batterey instead of brake control and ran it thrue resetable breaker to relay and triggerd with cigar lighter circuit. Thanks for the input.
