I recently rebuilt my Getrag and noticed after I got everything reinstalled, that it was harder to shift (stick harder to move; doesnt pop back to center in neutral) than before, and that it now makes more noise than before. I am certain I didnt get the mainshaft too tight. It makes more of a whining noise, like an old 2 ton truck. I did notice some abnormal wear on a few of the gears, but thought nothing of it at the time. I got the synchros from a transmission that had been rebuilt but set up way too tight (bearings had more wear than mine did),so that could be part of the probelm. Synchros LOOKED good, but I didnt get out the micrometer to check how bad they were worn. I may as well have not installed a synchro for 3rd gear for all the good it does. I figure the hard shifting is in the top, and I may need to take out the little spacer that was in there under the snapring, but I cant figure out why a worn out synchro (as in the friction seperating from the ring) would do better than a new one. Could the gear it rides on be too worn?

It also doesnt want to stay in 2nd gear when taking off. It popped into neutral 3x on my today.

I just finished mine and am happy so far with the results. I did though notice a little more than usual effort needed to find second. I ended up having to work on the clutch pedal because I was not getting enough disengagement. While I had mine apart I saw that I needed a 3/4 fork. Perhaps you are having your shifter symptoms from a poor setup in your cover or bad 1/2 fork? Or binding in the shift rails.
