Ok fellas. . . i just posted a topic on my injection pump going haywire. But It seems I just need some seals replaced. But, I did mention that there was smoke at idle in gear. Power Wagon told me that my injectors need to be tested, and to me, it seems some are going bad. When I got home today, I pulled in the driveway and put her in park. I then got a good background so I could see any smoke coming out of the exhuast pipe. Sure enough, now even at idle, there is a think cloud of greyish smoke. Now it is smoking 100% of the time, from a think, almost invisble cloud, to a thick black one at start up. What gives? Are my injectors bad, or is timing off or what? Thanks, I'm starting to get worried about my poor old Cummins...

Check for air. Grey/Blue stuff is often air. Another cause of it might be the engine running cold - is this happening only on warmup, or always.

Try high pressure bleeding at the injectors, they should flow clear fuel when you crack them. Try low-pressure bleeding at the lift pump.

My injectors got plugged with particles of something (pump? dirt?) and the symptoms were grey smoke and stumbled when it ran. The system never bled out at the injectors - the injectors weren't seating for the compression stroke and compression was coming right back up.

Check all the fittings and lines from the gas tank to the lift pump to the filter to the injection pump. Look for loose fittings, rubs, use some starting fluid and spray the lines, see if they are sucking air.

There is a fitting between the filter housing and the input into the injection pump - hiding out of sight behind the throttle linkage brackets - mine was drawing air right there.

It would seem that if your injectors were dribbling (poor spray pattern) you'd have black smoke. If they aren't reseating, it will be air, causing grey/blue.

Let us know how it turns out, jon.

Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL at ANY time you mess around diesel fuel lines under pressure! There's enough pressure there to INSTANTLY pierce or cut skin!

And believe me, THAT will ruin your whole day... #ad

I'll second that, I've known people who had to go to the hospital for blood poisioning from high pressure diesel fuel being 'hyposprayed' into the skin.

Later,
Joe
