Downloader, add on box or whatever..... is there anything out there that has truly stock smoke levels and can help mpg?

yep, its out there....

i have had great luck with my set-up. i bought a PPE excellerator when i bought my truck. first, i couldn't believe the power i got. second, i gained (after i got done playin') about 2-3 mpg. as time went on i did all the air mods, etc. with all that it ran cooler and felt more responsive. i found a dr. performance predator IV module (#2018) on ebay, and won it for $150! now on the overhead it reads 22mpg. although i am not really getting 22mpg, especially w/ 4:10 gears. i am getting over 650 miles per tank, and i do tend to let it run low. i had an airdog 150 fuel pump installed, since then i have noticed some more smoke than before. so, the answer is with the air mods and module/downloader stack, you can get an improvement of 3-4 mpg (no problem) and have very little smoke, even w/ the downloader set on extreme. i would highly recommend this set-up. i have a couple friends w/ the smarty, and although the smarty is impressive, they do not have any more sack than my truck does and their trucks smoke like crazy. i tell em', thanks, but no thanks to the smarty.

matt and brods.....

since you guys have 2005 models, PPE makes the excellerator in a 'hot' configuration... ... ... thats the ticket, theres your smarty without the smoke!:D

Ticket for mpg or power?

Carefull running it low on fuel all the time. The lift pump submerged in the fuel is cooled by the fuel so its hard on them especially if run dry. I am guessing your 650 miles is = to 19-20 mpg which is where I am at now. I don't know if is possible to do better with a 4x4 QC auto.

both.......

like i said i have 4:10 gears, and i have not met anyone yet, who is getting that mpg. i know people are getting those numbers, but from the guys i know, they are impressed. i wish that PPE made the 'hot' in the 2006 model, but not yet... ... ... as to the fuel running low, i know its not the smartest thing to do, but i haven't taken my chances lately... ... . i've heard that the 'draw straw' from the airdog will not get that last bit of juice from the tank if the truck is positioned certain ways... ... ..... mostly downhills. hey wags, totally not trying to diss the smarty, i know it is a sweet piece. my friends have kept up with the latest downloads, but they still smoke more than i do, especially at take off. went to a dyno run earlier this summer and all i kept hearing was that i wasn't getting enough fuel... . yet, i was pulling the same hp numbers as the guys running the smarty. again, the smarty is a sweet piece and from seeing all the threads on the forums, i know that people like it, but to each his own.

Anything else?

What about the plug and play boxes with on the fly adjustability?

Thanks for the replies so far. Can the PPE be switched back to stock on the fly? Does the PPE allow adjusting the ABS (tire size) on the stock program?

I am kind of leery of being stuck with another downloader since I have the Smarty and even with the much hyped REVO it still smokes way too much. I would gladly give up some bottom end to loose the smoke!

So Bob, just what REVO settings are supposed to produce the least smoke???? Seems like one of the high powered beta programs had the least smoke of all of them!

I like my TST on 1/1 which is timing only for mileage and minimal smoke. Probably very similar to smarty on its first level with timing. I routinely get 18-20mpg on summer fuel.

well, no..

the ppe is not adjustable on the fly, the new models have more things to use to change tire settings, axle, etc. i am very happy with it though. how bout 50hp injector nozzles? i heard of people getting 3-4mpg gain and no smoke!!! ppe says that you can run nozzles w/ their downloader and have had great luck.

Smarty with the latest Revo software.

My last two tanks have been 22. 4 and 22. 7 hand calc, less smoke than the previous software but all the same power, and if I can keep my foot less than half throttle no smoke at all. :)

My TST alone on 2/1 will improve mileage and add extra power with no smoke. Add the EZ on level 1 and very little smoke even with aggressive throttle. Add the Smarty (Latest Software) and the smoke is pretty bad on any setting 2 or above. I love the Smarty, but it does smoke a lot on mine. I guess just can't light the SPS66 quick enough.

I did a very cheap and simple mod. I purchased a muffler delete kit from Geno's Garage for I think $80. I installed it my self after purchasing a new muffler clamp. I saw 2-3 mpg increase on my 06 and have not seen less than 22 mpg driving the local hilly roads around town. I did not notice any change in the smoke level but i will say that it definitley has a deep throatier sound outside of idle and sounds mean when under load (excess of 10,000 lbs on a trailer).

With fuel prices being what they are it has paid for itself over and over again at the pump. By far the cheapest mod i have found for mpg.

What settings were you using?

if you want better mileage without alot of smoke i'd go with the TST on the lower settings. it also has gauges built in if you dont already have them. thats probably what i'm going to put on my 04. 5 in the near future.

I've been very dissappionted with the smoke from the Smarty. With any timing programs (I have the latest SW), I get a lot of smoke. 2mpg improvement but a lot of smoke. With no timing, I don't get any smoke until I get into it pretty good, about 75% throttle. It will blow coal after that, but up until that, it doesn't smoke at all, even on SW6 (130hp). If Bob and Marco are working to fix this, fine, I'll wait. If not, I'm going to change to something different.

It makes you wonder what about the timing advance makes smoke. I believe the TST (which it sounds like doesn't smoke much) advances only the main injection event, not the pilot. Maybe that's got something to do with it:confused:

I emailed Bob about the smoke and it seems the JR beta is doing better. But I never got a response as to whether or not those changes would be incorporated in the REVO.

tinman........

first i want to say that in one of the buildings i own, there is a guy with the licese plate 'tinman'. cool, huh. second. i really am upset that everyone's first answer for power is smarty! i need more power. SMARTY! well, i do believe that it is a good poduct, but it is too smokey! i have a friend, who has the smarty and he makes no more power than i do. guess what he smokes way more than me. i will tell you this; i have been totally happy with my PPE. i do

stack w/ a module, but the power is smooth and and seemless. i do, wish, however, that they made the 'hot' option for my year (2006). they say they will have it by the end of the year. if you want something that works well, gives good power, mileage and check dtc's. PPE is it. i have one of the first ppe excellerator's, the new ones have more options, etc.

On my mothers 2006 I put an edge milage max. The truck is a six speed with 4. 10 gears and 100% stock, with about 35,000 miles on it. The milage went from 19. 5 to 22. 5 with stock smoke, but also feels like stock power. The miles are all highway and the average is the same over many mouths. The best part is the chip is less than $300.
