Truck: 98, 144k miles, 21k miles on Royal Purple Synthetic MO.

Pretty nice, synthetic oil sure keeps things cleaner.

Disclaimer: I dont get a cent if you buy RP preducts and have no vested interest if you do.

I am impressed. You can eat out of the that valve cover. How does that compare to a good quality dino oil? As far as keeping the inside of the engine clean.

Thanks Texas Diesel for posting the pictures.

I've been super busy at work and wouldn't have found the time.

One correction, this is on a 96 3500 5 speed with the 215 Hp injectors and pump. These valve covers have been on the truck for 5 years and 100K + miles. I didn't like the funky one piece cover that came stock on the truck.

CBalvert, all I can say is that when I use dino oil, Rotella or Delvac 1300, is this: Just start the engine after an oil change and the new oil is black. The one time I tried synthetic MO the new oil stayed clean for several days. It amazed me how the synthetic oil kept the engine clean because the new oil stayed clean instead of immediately turning dark. I plan to go back to synthetic and go with 10k or 15k change intervals with a filter change every 5k. I'll do an analysis at 10k the first time verify that everything is ok.

Actually when I checked the oil level after the last change, (syn back to dino) it was the next day. I almost had a heart attack because I couldnt see the (black) oil on the dipstick. Looking closer it was at the full mark but COMPLETELY clean.

Maybe this doesn't really apply, but I was told once you go with a synthetic, not to go back to a regular oil. Any merit in this?

I run Valvoline Premium Blue Synthetic, and like it. I get a warm, fuzzy feeling of seeing the 'Big Blue C' on the can of the stuff I am feeding my CTD.

Actually on my 2003 the oil is still clean after 2000 miles. On my old truck it was black after only a few miles. Now, as far as I know that "black" is soot that is in suspension. Isn't that part of the oils job to keep the soot in suspension? If it is not in the oil, then where is is? The 2003's oil is so clean because no soot is produced in the crankcase. I am no expert but that is my understanding.

AND the Premium Blue is API approved not like the 'other' A***Way brand.

CBalvert, you have a good point.

If my oil did not get dark I would be worried. I would lay awake at night wondering where the soot and other combustion byproducts were being deposited. If you don't run a bypass and the oil is not getting dark in a few thousand miles it is not suspending the garbage.

My oil is changed every 2500 - 3500 miles and is just getting dark at that time. I did the tab on the dowel pin and set valve lash and all looks as clean as the posted pics. currently using rotella. It is strange how some engines soot up the oil quicker with no apparent difference in age or condition.
