Fan clutch removal.........help!

I just towed our 8000 pound trailer since the Mopar Exhaust brake was installed. The brake works GREAT! Seems that I lost some power though. Is that usually the case? I'm looking to start bombing! Need more power! What would be the most useful product to start without going through a clutch replacement right away. It's not even a year old yet and I don't want to think about the clutch yet. EZ Box is what I thought. Also a 4 inch exhaust. Maybe injectors after the clutch replacement down the road. With all these mods in place, is this engine still dependable or am I overworking components for an early failure? Thanks in advance...

Nickaru, your thinking is good

get an EZ and gages too, pyrometer, boost and fuel psi

injecters wont hurt a bit either, but thats about it until you clutch her, was for me anyhow

when you get ready for the clutch get a Southbend

More Power

Carefull !! Starting down this road [adding power] is like starting a drug addiction!!

But it is so much fun!!

The Ez box is a very good place to start, then exactly as you stated some larger injectors, but only if you plan on adding a clutch.

I do believe that if you drive without abusing the clutch, that it will hold onto the power of the EZ and either 275 injectors or stage 1 injectors. This may vary from truck to truck and defintely from driver to driver.

You can add the 4" exhaust, but with the above mods [bombs] I can't get above 1100* pre-turbo temps. This is with stock exhaust.

Have fun!! Contact doug or Andy @ www.smokindiesel.com they have been very helpful to me. Greg L

Like everyone said get gauges first and take a baseline of what your truck is doing. I would get an Edge Comp box and not hook up the pump wire, running it this way is the same as a EZ, then when you want more power later on you won't have to try and sell the EZ to buy the Comp, besides, the comp is only a few bucks more than the EZ and I actually bought my comp for less than an EZ, got a real good deal at Christmas time. Keep checking all the distributors and eventually you will find a good promotion going on. I would also add stage 1's or stage 2 injectors after I put in a new clutch to hold all that extra power.

If you tow, stay with the lower injectors and lower settings on the comp box.

If you just want HP for spinning your wheels go with bigger injectors and all the goodies out there.

If you tow and when you unhook like to spin the tires then you are limited to the lower injectors and lower settings for towing but when you unhook you can turn up the comp and show off the smoke from the tires. ;)

There are other combinations and go fast parts dealers, If I was to list everyones combination my life would probably end before I was able to finish, there are alot of products out on the market, do your research and have fun.

BOMBING

I second the fact that bombing is like a drug addiction... I started innocently enough with a Power Edge EZ and can't stop!!

Where is that Piers turbo anyway????

I agree with what everyone else said above, and just to help make a piont I got my comp for $50. 00 more than what most places sell the EZ for. It was a no brainer and I love it.

For a versatile and cost effective performance upgrade I don't think you can beat the PE COMP:D I am eagerly awaiting the UPS man with my DD version:D

WOW ! Boys, I am impressed Usually when a post comes on the board like this ... ... [begin nuclear blast sound] instantly there is somethin like 900 views and 60 posts #ad
[/End Nuke] and the old WHITE ON RICE phrase comes to mind Man I remember that one When the smoke cleared The Grin Started #ad
But when Ya do do something the best way to describe it ..... Intoxicating! Ron , I like that formula #ad

I tried an EZ and a Comp on my ETH/DEE. I ultimately went with the Comp due to the in-cab adjustibility. I wouldn't put injectors in until you're ready to do the clutch also. My DDI's with the Comp caused my clutch to start slipping (of course I abused it a bit on the test runs :) :) ). Once you start down the slipping clutch path it only gets worse.

The injectors will also make a big difference so they are definately worth it, but my clutch slips so bad right now that I have to keep the Comp on level 1 AND keep my foot out it.

If you want more power - you might consider a Dr. Performance kit -the only downside is- its not cheap - $1995-2495, but it adds the horsepower and torque - where you need it. My brother-In-law has one on his 2001 Ram2500 and when he hauls his 29ft trailer-has to check the rearview mirror to make sure its still there. Most power chips only increase the amount of fuel - which for a diesel doesn't make for longer engine life. Apparently the #1 and 2 Dr. Performance kits don't affect your warranty. Just check the web for Dr. Performance - they will give the info and the prices.

FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS DRIVE FORDS !!

And, TDR Members, Don't let TDR Members use Dr. Performance or Banks products without the utmost research.

Many other vendors provide performance upgrades that have a proven and reliable reputation for power at far less cost.

ddesau,

Do a search on Bully Dog, PE; EZ, COMP, and Diesel Dynamics to name just a few. Let me know what you think :-{}

BTW, do one on Dr. Performance:{

The Edge EZ is a real nice power upgrade for the ETH, I ran this way before I became totally infected with the mad BOMBer virus, the EZ box alone is a good kick in the pants on a otherwise stock ETH. As stated above, add some gauges first. If I were to do it again, my first two gauges would be egt. , pre-turbo and fuel pressure, post filter, in that order. You will find that your egt's will come down with the EZ box and the boost elbow installed, made a dramatic diiference in my readings before/after the EZ install.

I totally agree with you Big Daddy - always research something like this before you do it. I can only comment on what my brother-in-law has told me about the performance he gets with his truck - right now I am happy with my truck (of course it only has 1800 miles on it - so I am still learning ) :)

ddesau - Why don't you tell your bro-in-law about the TDR and sign him up. Then we would have maybe two members that are happy with there Dr. P stuff. :D :D :D :D

Welcome aboard...

First of all - he's the one who told me about TDR - he's already a member. And at this point I haven't installed any aftermartket stuff- such as DR. P - still researching the best stuff to use.

He told me there was lot of info at TDR -

Before you believe the spin on DR. pee's not voiding your warranty call a Dodge service dept. Not your local stealer, as they will note it in their computer and check you out real close next visit, and ask if adding any performance mods will affect the warranty. Mention DR. Pee, Banks or any other performance vendors that you choose.

They all have a bulletin from DC to look for chips, nicked injector pump wires, nonstock ( OEM ) waste gate actuator hose clamps and... .....

Any of the above will result in a voided drive train warrany.

Nickaru: Are you sure that the e brake butterfly is adjusted so that is is all the way open when e brake is off ??? Make sure it is not sticking part way closed.

I appreciate the info - at this point I've spent enough money on this truck - the truck plus $1000 worth of extra's. I like my truck the way it is - my brother-in-law bought his from a Dealer with the Dr. P kit already installed. I do notice a big difference in power in his truck - But I'm not about to screw up a good warranty. . I've added a K&N filter which seems to make a little difference - but I've got better ways to spend 2K !

:p

Interesting.

my brother-in-law bought his from a Dealer with the Dr. P kit already installed.
Was it new or used? If it was new, then that must be a great dealer. Let me know the name so I can go there next time. :D :D :D :D

I've had my EZ in for a week and pulled my 4200lb trailer over to the inlaws last friday and experianced clutch slip on flat ground just starting from a stop light. I've been very easy on this clutch since new, 12500 miles, and was very surprised to have slippage with just an EZ and nothing else. I haven't even put in the boost elbow yet either. These Dodges are a bit more fragile than I was led to believe!:(
