i don't know where to post this but here it goes, my dad has a ford f250 with a 5. 8L gas motor and he want more power for towing any ideas what he could do to his truck to get more power? (besides putting a cummins in it). thanks
On my old 5. 8 gas Ford (78) put on headers and dual exhaust, which made enough of a difference that hills requiring downshift was pulled in direct. Add a low restrictionair filter to top it off.
This is what's great about this newsgroup... Even though this newsgroup primarily focuses on Cummins powered Dodge trucks we can give unbiased (usually) opinions on other vehicles... If you were to post a message such as this on many other newsgroups, the flaming would of been ridiculous and ended up in a 'mine is better than yours' flame war.
gregdoerfler, Within reason, you can develop more power and stay within emision regulations. Look at www.JEGS.COM for tubular shorty headers that will take the place of the cast manifolds. Also, you can look for a cat-back exhaust for the truck as well as a new "EEC" module. At least I think that is what Ford calls the ECM now. If I remember right, Ford did not always have the ability to change out chips, you had to replace the entire "computer" to get a performance calibration for power, or install something "pickybacked" to the stock computer. Also, if you can raise the fuel pressure a little, that will help power too. All in all, you can probably get another 10 to 15% increase at the rear wheels and not worry about the smog police. HTH
