Searched and read all posts on this, but mine seems a little different. First couple of cold days, had loud hum, like ps pump for 5 minutes til warmed up. Always had good brakes and steering. Yesterday started truck, no hum, and no ps or pb. Checked fluid, very low, puddle on ground. Topped off fluid, no noise, ps and pb work normal. Tested for leaks with engine running, wheel held full turn in each direction. No leaks that I could find. But have seen no evidence of foaming, so not sure if nitrogen canister fired to push fluid out. Dipstick cap was well coated with fluid, though. If I do the parking lot check of turning off engine and attempt to stop, will that fire the can? Don't understand if thats a re-usable system, or a one time emergency stopper. Don't want to create more problems

thanks, Matt

am I right on assuming the can is the accumulator on the left side of the booster if your looking right at it?

If yes if you do the parking lot test yes you should have assist from the accumulator. only one pedal apply though. also its not a one time use. the p/s system presssurizes it and a nitro or hydrogen or some other gas like that keeps a pressure behind it.

put some UV dye in there, and crawl under there w/ the engine running at night w/ a black light... you'll see really quick where the leak is coming from.

mine ended up being the booster assembly.

What he said. I put the UV dye in the power steering fluid and had a small leak from the hydroboost unit. The dye was flourescent light green, so the fluid colour changed even if you don't have a light.

I believe you are right about the analysis of the accumulator function. The hydroboost must be replaced as a unit. I replaced mine with a new one from www.hydratechbraking.com. Call or email and Paul Clark with be glad to diagnose your problem... he did mine. We exchanged emails and I bought a new unit from him. You won't find the OEM unit on his web site, so you have to call or email. All the website stuff is for conversions. Mine cost $275 for a NEW unit.

Look on his website and you will find good info on how hydroboost works. Do a search on my user name "dave m" and you will find lots on hydroboost units. If I can help more let me know. I was very satisified with the hydroboost unit I got and great customer service.

Good luck,

Dave

Update: Rolled down the driveway in neutral, killed the engine, still had power assist for brakes and steering. Doesn't this eliminate hydroboost? On my way to buy some dye. Did another 20 turns lock to lock, fluid seems to be staying full. Is there anything else that would push out a puddle of ps fluid, then be so hard to find?

thanks again, Matt
