Mosquito Magnet Defender?

While camping at Fort Desoto this past weekend with family and friends and their 5th wheels, my bro in law pulled out his mosquito fogger that uses a little propane can and some solution that comes with it. It works pretty good for about 30-45 minutes. Then the skeeters come back to eat us alive.

My wife just saw a gadget in the Target ad for a Mosquito Magnet Defender for a jaw dropping $300. 00. It uses a 20 lb propane bottle and claims to work for a half acre. Anyone tried one of these and if so do they work? Skeeters are a major pain in the campground and while high priced, if the gadget works and lasts a lifetime, might be worth it.

I've done the fogger thing, about 30 min at best.



At Home Depot they have a Mosquito Magnet brand. I am thinking the same thing. How about "no see ums" do they work against them too?

What are mosquito's ... Just kidding There hasn't been a skeeter here in probably a thousand years... I just love it... But this time of year it is close to 120 degrees nearly every afternoon... . That is the trade-off

I have had the Mosquito Magnet Defender in my yard for about 6 weeks. It has captured a good many mosquitos (maybe 200) during that time. I am in Northern Va. near Washington DC where we have the Asian Tiger mosquito that bites in the daytime.



The machine is good at capturing regular mosquitos, tiger mosquitos, midges, no-see ums, etc. I got my unit at Home Deopt for $295. You have to supply your own propane tank which lasts about 3 to 4 weeks. There is also a low voltage cord you need to plug into AC to run the fan that sucks in the bugs.

I checked EBay and there are several of the different models there for a range of pricing. Have to compare Ebay pricing & shipping with Home Depot pricing.



The no see ums often are worse than the mosquitoes. I live in central florida and camp here and it can get really useless to get away for a weekend due to the bitting insect populations.



If these really do work, could be a real piece of "required" take along.

My wife just told me about a review of these & the test that was done for the review. These "facts" are from memory, so don't hold me to them. They put about 1200 mosquitoes in an enclosure & tested different models of "traps". The most expensive (don't rem the brand etc. , but about $1300) was the most effective. It got about half ie. 600 some odd. The other were all much less effective, getting about 2-3 hundred. The review also indicated that the traps were not effective on all kinds of mosquitoes. My conclusion was that the $300 versions I would consider were only marginally effective and maybe not worth fooling with... ... ... ... It was disappointing to me as we live in Louisiana and West Nile Virus is a concern.

I think we'll be sticking with the mosquito repellent. The cheep stuff works for a couple of hours with I think 7% DEET. Deep Woods Off is available with up to 100% DEET and lasts 10 hours. Wife wants to try the towelettes. I hate skeeters. Specially the mean nasty vicious females!

The female skeeters say they only bite to feed their babies. Seems I've heard that story before... And then there's the black widow with her one shot husband. And to think he has it made compared to the praying mantis. She bites his head off to initiate his one time of pure ecstasy!

$1300 and it leaves 600 mosquitoes behind



I wouldn't want to be in a room with 600 of them miserable little blood suckers! All it takes for me is one of them buzzing around in the bedroom to get me out of bed and doing a room to room search to find the little creep. I grew up in Florida and developed a deep rooted hate of mosquitoes.
