Pocket Tazer Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife.

2 Tales For You Texans.....

My uncle asked me to clean this rifle for him, I believe it was owned by my great grandfather. I thought it was outfitted in a unique way and thought I could see if someone could date it. My uncle remembers the gun as far back as the 50's when he was a kid. It has three different sights on it, the usual iron sights on the barrel, a Mossberg 4 power scope and a sight mounted at the rear of the receiver that if the scope is removed swings into position and you can adjust the windage and elevation. It is loaded under the barrel by twisting and pulling out a plunger and dropping the bullets toward the bolt then replacing the plunger.

On the barrel is written, C. F Mossberg & Sons, Inc. New Haven Conn. U. S. A and 4 6 B ( a ) 22 S-L-LR. The scope has Mossberg No. M4D 4 Power. On the rear sight it reads, Mossberg Microclick S-100. Thought I would see if anyone here might have an idea.

Thanks,

Scott

I've got a model 46 and love it. No scope, though. I was told from seller that this was similar to a US Army training model used shortly after WWII. From what's included in the info, sounds like yours is from 1946-47.

It's actually Mossberg, O. F. & Sons, Inc. Those are great firearms, and usually very good shooters, however, collector values are not the highest, and serialization is not readily available in my books. A quick call to Mossberg customer service would probably give you the exact date and delivery of the firearm, including who it sold to, who probably would have sold it to your family. I can't really help you on the sights, but the rifle itself is a model 46B(a), touted as the new "Streamlined" design, manufactured from 1938 to 1945, when it was replaced with the model 46M(a) and 46M(b). The (a) is the sight designation given from the factory, and I have no information on that. In 100% mint condition, it's worth around $250, typically going more in the $100-$150 range. Your unique sighting options would up that value 20-50%, in my experience.

I have Mossberg's corporate contact information as:

O. F. Mossberg and Sons, Inc.

7 Grasso Ave. , P. O. Box 497

North Haven, CT 06473-9844

Phone: 203-230-5300

I'm not sure if that's still correct, but was as of 2008..... If nothing else, they're usually very friendly, and can point you in the right direction if you want to find out more.

Oh yeah... good link!! Lots of info, there. I don't have a whole lot available to me on these rifles..... appears you have the postwar model with the full length tubular magazine..... There ya go!

Besides my Marlin 39 lever with octagonal barrel, it's probably my favorite. Well, at least this week... ;-) Good info!

Thanks guys. I took it all apart and cleaned it up and everything seems to work really well. I need to try and get the bolt to move a little more smoothly, it seems tight. Took me a little while to get the peep sight cleaned up and usable. I plan on taking it to the range this weekend and see how well it fires.
