Ready to Bomb

No TC and VB combos!!...

what's the most power that you have put through your stock auto? were the line pressures upped or did you add a shift kit? totally stock? what failed if your transmission did fail?

i am obviously getting away with too much power for my transmission, but i'm curious to see who else has gone well above 300hp on a basically stock auto.

300HP or so for 60K miles, 350 HP or so for 20K miles. See sig for current level of bombs, transmission is BONE STOCK with line pressure upped to 64 at idle in drive.

it seems like at this point that the converter is the next weakest link. i've heard stories about how the inside of the converter looks shot to some people so i wonder what mine's like. the biggest thing that most people do is slip the converter clutch. you need to get around that problem- a simple switch. and the line pressure certainly helps... although it isn't what a full transmission will put out for line pressure.

Just did a full trany job at 95k miles. The TC was completely shot. I could pull through lock-up (read ssllliipp).

Converter efficiency (fluid coupling) was so bad my shift points at WOT were 2750 rpm. On gutting the TC the lockup friction ring was burned and the turbine (output) hub splines were mostly gone.

I bought the truck stock at 50k. I did governor springs around 75k and #4 plate around 80k. The only thing I did to the trany was add Lube gard.

If I would have done just a valve body, the converter would have puked in short order. I could have gotten away with a TC and VB swap, but with 95K I decided to go for a complete rebuild.

No indication the splines were wore.

Talking to the guys at the trany shop they replace the hub in around half the converters. They use a Sonnax replacement hub that is spline hardened to reduce wear.
