Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Where's my power?

Tonight I took care of my leaky preheater. While I was working on this. I wondering where that tapping noise is coming from. I have posted about this a few times now with no answers. Have had this noise for years now.

So I fired up the truck after I primed the preheater. Let it run for awhile. I ran the rpms up a few times. I noticed that the motor mount on the truck was moving up and down quite a bit. I tighted up the 21mm nut a little. Ran it again and the motor still lifts up about 1/8 inch or better.

Why is the bolt so much undersized than the motor mount hole. I've got it as tight as I can. The Bolt Does NOT Move At All When The Motor Is Running. But the motor mount is jumping up and down in that bolt.

When I run over 60 mph and or get on some bumpy roads I hear this tapping noise. I thinking thats its enough torque that the motor is rattling up and down. Its the mount on the drivers side. Thats is also the side that lifts when I blip the throttle.

Just wonder if this is normal? Looking for a good cure. If anyone has one.

Grasp the front and rear shocks, are they sloppy on the metal bushing/sleeve to lower retention bolt fit?

Good luck and let us know,

Andy

The motor mount brackets on the frame are slotted. To raise or pull the engine you only have to loosen the nuts on the bolts.

Well how many miles do you have on your truck? do you have clunking in the steering wheel and when pulling in clutch in low gear... i do and it was the driver side mount. they cost around 150 for the pair from the dealer

Good luck

Hey EBottema! Have you been riding in my truck! That clunking in the steering wheel and putting in and taking out the clutch is EXACTLY what I am experiencing these days. I have 177K+ miles on my bucket of bolts. This is something I need to check into fast.

Thanks for the info!

LOL-

The driver side mount is shredded on mine towards the rear. Seems like the rubber gets toast at about 150-200 with the cummins shake :D

I think cummins also sells the part but it is not much cheaper than dodge

Easy fix, wait for my new thread on special hole. coming soon :)

Well EBottema, don't wait too long to post your new thread about this fix. Curious minds want to know. (especially if it can save us some time/money).

Normally does it at speeds at 60 or above. Not steering related.

Its only a suspect right now. But it sure makes sense too me.

I would think a slightly tighter fitting bolt would take some of the slop out. I've had this noise for years now. Would be nice to cure once and for all.
