Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Transmission problems

I am concerned that I may have a problem developing with my motor. I currently have 70,000 miles on the truck without any problems. The truck is used mostly for commuting 42 miles each way to work.

Occasionally it gets to work by hauling the 5th wheel. In the past it would feel that it would get stronger the further I would pull, as if it was ‘blowing the cobs out’ as we used to say. The truck seems to really like to run 70 mph or higher when it is pulling.

I just returned from a 1200-mile trip with the trailer. The power just didn’t seem to be there. I have experienced several times in the past 6 months the dead accelerator pedal, which clears up when I stomp on it a couple times. The lift pump is original and I monitor it with a gauge. I was concerned that the pressures had been low at 6-7 lbs idle and below 4 at WOT. Currently, within the last 2000-4000 miles, the pressures have been consistently 10-11 lbs at idle and 7 at WOT. The motor doesn’t seem to run as smoothly as before, at WOT it seems almost like a miss or a weak cylinder. I have hit pyro temps as high as 1400 pre turbo before I noticed and then dropped the power to a level not to exceed 1200 for any amount of time. I did have the stock turbo wastegate turnbuckled closed and could hit 26 psi, I have removed the turnbuckle when I noticed the motor running differently and now peaks at 20 psi. I consistently use fuel conditioner of various brands.

I am wondering if the injector pump is getting bad, since the lift pump pressures seem to have changed. Or if I burnt a piston at high temps. Or perhaps a less serious problem. I don’t know what the symptoms are for a bad injector pump or for a damaged piston so if someone could help out. Anything I should check out?

I have been havingthe same exact problems you Have. The dealer just installed a new lift pump two weeks ago and now the injection pump is being replaced i will let you Know how it turns out. I havent updated my profile yet but i have an 02 qc with a 5 spd. Bone stock(except for the cup smoothie best upgrade you could do).

I regularily change the fuel filter every 12000-15000 miles. I don't recall when I changed last but it hasn't been very long. Of course it only takes one bad tank of fuel to require a change.

I have not had a check engine light come on so I have not checked for codes. Should I?

I have read on the forum several say that the think their injector pump is failing but I have not read what symptoms was exhibited.

Well, I finally figured how to pull codes without spending for a code reader. I have P1693 and P0216. This morning I was wondering if I would make it to work due to the way the truck was acting. It had the dead peddle, ran rough and seems to lack power. It also seems to be getting better fuel economy as well as being reluctant to blow smoke under hard accelleration, it also seems to surge although RPMS don't change. I guess a trip to the service department is in order. :{

Well, I removed the Bully Dog box to see if the motor would run differently, and to prepare to take the truck to the dealer. The motor certainly has less power without the box. Funny, I don't remember it adding so much power when it was installed.

Can anyone recommend a good service dept. to take my truck for warranty work? I live in McKinney, Tx so suggestions in North Dallas, Plano, Lewisville, Grapevine would be good. I am hoping someone knows a service dept. that has a diesel mechanic that can be trusted to do good work.

lack of power.

Boy I sure hope that my reading is correct in all of this. Please check out the APPS ( pins 1/2 and 1/6) sounds to me that the Idle and off-idle is bad this lack of power and better fuel economy should go hand in hand. for mine gets 24 + mile to the US gal, best yet :{ has been 30 and 7. 2 L per 100 km's Can you spell DE-FUELING and no power.

i am in the same situation with my truck right now. i had a loss of power. but just like plipping a switch it would come back. im in the middle of checking mine out. btw i also have a code p0216. not the p1287 though. but i have had it in the past.

99 not running well?

Accelerator Pedel Position sensor. It is an electronic rehiostat (resistor) that has a variable voltage to the ECM to tell the FPCM ( in the vp-44 ) how much fuel to deliver to the injectors. Simple if it works??????
