Wanna Race?

Can anyone recommend a good motorcycle website or discussion board? Something like this would be great. High volume, etc.

I am considering getting a cycle and have been eyeing the BMW R1150GS.

I did a search on yahoo but nothing good came up.

Thanks.

JC, I see from your sigfile, you made it to Sand City, so am guessing there was no European layover or pitstop at one of the local AFBs on your "round the world trip". Oh well, perhaps we'll meet up on the return journey. You might also meet up with another TDR member on your travels out there <BenHall> formally of Spangdahlen AFB..... :). Keep your head down and the bullet with your name on it in your back pocket at all times!!

Thanks guys,

I have been doing some more research and the R 1150 RT is starting to look pretty good. I would be mostly driving on pavement with the occasional jaunt on gravel. No off-roading.

However, it would be nice to be able to jump on a fire lane every now and then.

I would like to take some long trips to the national parks. Which bike?

P. S. I probably will be by myself.

R1150RT

Jalberring,

The R1150RT is basically an on pavement bike. It can handle dirt roads but it is certainly not a dirt bike. The R1150GS is much more at home in the dirt and can handle the pavement superbly with the caveat that the wind protection for the rider is minimized. Even the GS, however, is not a true dirt bike as it is heavy. I have seen R1100GS bikes cut the corners at Laguna Seca race track and they are no slouch, neither is the RT with the telelever suspension. I have owned three BMW's and they are excellent motorcycles especially for those who ride alot. There are regional clubs and rallys if you are into getting together with other like minded folks.

I currently own a 88 R100GS. It is a great bike aside from the gearing(whines on the highway at 75). This is my first bike and I would not hesitate to buy another BMW especially a GS. The new GS's are way better than my old dinosaur. This bike has only stranded me once and that was my own fault(ran out of gas and had the petcock on aux already). DOH!!!!!!. I was on a discussion list on the net called airheads look it up they can point you in the right direction. I was reffered to a GS specific list and have since gotten off of it but may do it again in the near future.

I have been riding BMW motorcycles since about 1976. The most recent one is a GS, the GS Adventure, which has lower gearing than the standard, it taller, and has a bigger fuel tank. The GS handles unbelievably well, and is as capable on the twisties as it is on unimproved terrain. I have Hepco Becker luggage, an aluminum pannier that looks industrial/utilitarian.

You have to ride a GS to understand. I had a K12RS before, which is an incredible rocket ship, but the GS, to me, is lots more fun, because it goes anywhere and any necessary speed, from slow to fast.

Get one, you will love it.

12RS

Gordon,

How did you like the K12RS? I have been thinking about getting one or perhaps the R1150GS. I have been riding a '90 K100LT for the last decade. In over a decade I have had a flat, a leaky water pump seal and the speedo had a fairly common electrical glitch fixed under warranty. It has been in the shop once!

Well after reading the above posts, I went to my local BMW Motorcycle dealer and looked at the R1150GS Adventure.

This is a very cool looking bike.

I know nothing about BMW bikes but I sure would like one of these.

They are quite expensive.

Every bike in the showroom had a sold sign on it!!

I think I'm going to do a little research and maybe make a purchase soon.

BMW motorcycles

SC,

You might look at a good used one if money is an issue as BMW's are similar to our CTD in that miles do not mean that much to the longevity of the bike. Well taken care of, the BMW engine lasts a very long time. A R1150GS with 40-50,000 miles on it is not excessive at all for a BMW.

jm, Thanks for the info. I would not have known.

I am guessing that the BMW is the top of the line dual purpose bike.

But how do the others compare?

You forgot Harley Davidson!

JMorrow,

I don't have a lot of experience with other dual purpose bikes. If you want a pure dirt bike, like a motocross bike, you are basically limiting yourself to dirt riding only as they are not for the highway, but they are great in the dirt! All bikes are compromises and the GS is a bike that can eat up highway miles just fine and still go on the dirt. Some of the other dual purpose bikes are not as comfortable on the pavement but are much less expensive. Good luck with whatever you decide to purchase.
