Check out Camping World. They were running a big sale on them last week. I think they were less than $80 and that was a great price. You should not have to pay any more than $100 in any case.

I have carefully reviewed all of the above ideas and suggestions. Dean's radio is the same exact as ours, and the installation (except for the antenna) is quite innovative, and professional. The antenna is however, as I see it, out of line (from a side view, several inches ahead of) the radio antenna and that sort of looks aesymmetrical. So what I decided to do is put together a portable temporary fix (cigarette lighter power, and magnetic antenna to put on top of the rig for us to use for emergencies and weather updates. If we can figure out the antenna symmetry, I will probably install permanently using Dean's fine pictures and ideas.

Thanks to all for your great advice.

Prairie Dog:

I couldn't post a picture right here because it said it was too big. However, I put some on Reader's Rig's under "Boonieman's Truck". I think you can see how I did it, plus I included a shot of how the CB looks in the cab. The antennae is mounted behind the cab left-side. I mounted it as high as I could get it. I put it right next to my cell phone antennae although the directions tell you to keep them 18" apart I think, but this is the third truck I've had antennaes mounted this way and never a problem. I ran the wires down the back and under the plastic trim piece along the doors all the way to the front. There's enough slack in the plastic... you don't have to take the trim off or anything. If you look at the picture of the cab, you'll see where the CB mike is mounted. The tab holder that holds the mike slid right between the plastic front on the dash. It's very tight and I didn't use any screws or anything. If you need more info, or a better pic, let me know.

dean, what's the model number of that motorola speaker? it looks like it fits pretty

Curt,

There is no number on the speakers. They are the speakers that come with the hands free kit for the Startac and v60 cell phones and they measure about 2 1/2'" x 4 1/8". You should be able to get one from who ever does Motorola installs in your area, mine came from the people that install for Cingular.

GSevison,

Placement of the antenna was tough because of the line of the hood and I really didn't want to put it throught the fender. The G2's matched up better. I needed the "whip" to get in my garage and that type of antenna has served me well for several years. I didn't want to have anything in back of the cab in the body of the truck. It probably looks better "in person" than it does in the picture. If I used the cb more, I would probably use a stake mount bracket with firesticks. One reason I did it this way is that if I see a better arrangement, I can easily take this little bracket off.

Thanks Danny, that looks good. By the way, Camping world has the Cobra on sale rite now for $50 and it is of the controls in the handset variety.

As far as how one C. B. performs compared to another, it really only depends on the ant. The radio's them selves all put out the same power as long as you stick with a US model.

Hey Danny , you've made a terrible mistake!!! When you installed your cell phone mount you covered up your french fry holder!

Or am I the only one that's figured out that rectangular hole was designed to hold a large McDonald's fry perfectly?

;) :D ;)

I agree about the antennae mount. The very best CB/antennae combo I've used to date was an 8' whip mounted to the back laft side of my old blazer with a Cobra 29 inside. I'd pull the whip down and tie it to the front bumper when going thru the woods. I know the legal wattage on all these units is equivalent.

what have others done with a slide in camper that is taken on and off as needed? I looked at the pictures of the fender mount. Has anybody done anything from a front bull bar or grill guard?

I think i will make a mount for the antenna that come off where the bed mounts to the frame . The antenna will come up between the bed and the cab. I will put some sort of rubber on the antenna to keep it from hitting the cab. There is a factory hole drilled already in the bed mount . I might do a dual antenna. What do you think?

I received a notice in the mail about the sale of the CB radio and some other things. The sale ends the end of the month and it was for members of the President's Club.

You could try calling the order number: 1-800-626-5944.

I'm sure that they would let you join and then sell you a radio.

I just talked to Camping World. They ran out of stock of the Cobra radios a week ago. This was a "until stock runs out" special. If anybody else hears of a cheap place to get one of these radios, please let me know. They are about 90 bucks on ebay.
