After 9 happy years with 2004. 5 I made the mistake of stopping by my local dodge dealer and struck a pretty excellent deal on a new but leftover 2012,. It is a Laramie Limited with every option less DVD. Black Crew cab, 8 foot bed. Pretty nice truck and for what they offered on my old truck and the discounts on the new one I was presently surprised.

Anyhow, hopefully I did not make a rash decision on a leftover but how do the members out there like their 4th generation trucks? Thanks

Hi,
I have a 3rd gen 2008 6. 7L 6 spd auto with 3:73 gears. So I am somewhat familiar with the 6. 7L engine. You should not expect the same fuel mileage as the 2004. 5, 5. 9L achieved. This truck will use diesel fuel to clean the DPF during active regeneration, also do not use the truck as a grocery getter if you do, it will burn more fuel as it regens more often. Use the exhaust brake all of the time as this will help the VGT to stay cleaner due to soot. Use the toggle switch for the auto to keep the RPM's up, say around 1600 to 1900 RPM's. I usually lock 5th and 6th gear out in town shifting up to the other gears as need on the highway.

Others may chime in on additional items on the 4th gen that they are more familiar with them than me.

I did the same thing and am I sorry now. Traded in my 04 on a 2012 these 2012 trucks get rotten fuel mileage. I would give anything to have my 04 back.

Well in a few hours I go to pick it up and trade the 04. 5.
Hopefully I won't miss it.
As for MPG, I was never really impressed with my 04. 5, 13-14 back and fourth to work, 10 miles each way, minimal traffic. On trips, at 70 mph it would barely make 17.
Towing 10 mpg, with a 10,000 lbs haulmark car trailer loaded. It did much better until the ULSD came out. Power wise the 04. 5 seems to be getting faster, maybe.

I think you will like the 4th generation over your old truck. Everything has been upgraded except for emissions and mileage. Once you learn about the truck and the indiosyncrasies of the emissions you will be fine. I have driven a 4th generation and it is truly a nicer truck than the third generation.
I currently drive an 09 third generation with 42k miles. Knock on wood it has been a trouble free truck except for a tire pressure sensor. The truck is mainly a third vehicle in the family but have had to drive it daily for the past month. In town driving kills the mileage - 14 mpg. Mixed driving I have been getting 18. 5 mpg (no more than 65 mph).

well luckily or maybe not, but anyhow got it home. Someone else drove 100 miles to get the truck only to find out it was sold this morning. My friend who is the salesman asked why they did not call first response was "It was on your website"
Truck is really nice, ever bell and whistle, which take some time to figure out. Never needed all the gadgets, always old school with manual everything, but I struck a really good deal, better than trade in for a leftover new truck .

BTW, only issue on the way home was the passenger seat rattled when going over bumps. Anyone else have this?

If the seat belt's shoulder harness is twisted, the buckle will rattle against the B pillar. I have to straighten the belt every time my wife gets out of the truck.

Thanks, I just checked that and that was the exact problem, wife rode in it before the rattle:-laf

This even happens on third gen trucks too.

Nice looking 4th gen truck. From what I have read on the forums, an owners manual does not come with the truck any more, is this true? You now get a DVD/CD instead?

That was true with my truck, but the dealer was able to order the paper owners manuals for the truck, nav/infotainment system, etc. , so I now have both.

Thanks to all. It runs really good, more bells and whistles than I know what to do with as my 96 CTD was an SLT as was my 04. 5. Do not think i will be doing any mods to the drivetrain, its fine stock. I kept the last two CTD trucks stock until the warranties were up and still did little modifications.
Will so how it tows this weekend with a trip to Maple Grove Raceway.

Looks quite hansom. I think you'll be very happy with your decision. The 6. 7L and the 68RFE are absolutely awesome. Enjoy that sweet ride!

Best,
